Alex Dillabough to get roof repairs

The Town of Battleford got some bad news Monday: they need to spend an additional $20,000 on the Alex Dillabough Centre roof.

That news was relayed to Battleford town council by Randy Redding of the Battleford Parks and Recreation Department. He told the mayor and councillors at their regular meeting that contractors havec found the roof needed much more extensive repairs than was previously thought.

Flynn Canada Roofing already had the contract to do renovations for the roof. The original plan was to use what was there and put an additional coating on top, but word came back that the roof was too far gone for that to be successful.

"There was more damage than originally anticipated," said Mayor Chris Odishaw.

Council approved Option 2: removal of the existing roofing and a fresh start. It means the Alex Dillabough Centre will basically have a new roof on north side.

The roof problems are a natural result of the wear and tear the facility has gone through over some 25 years of active use.

"When it rains it pours," said Odishaw, " and when it pours, of course, leaks in the roof turn up."

The approval of the roof replacement brings the overall cost the repairs up to $69,000, Odishaw said.

Odishaw described the importance of the Alex Dillabough Centre to the community, saying the facility acts as the town's community centre for events, weddings and conventions. The facility accommodates about 600 people.

"We're going to keep it up to pristine condition," Odishaw said.
