Combines in red, yellow and green worked together last Thursday to bring in the harvest of the Jim and Cheryl Johnston donation land.
The profits made on the land help pay for upgrades, equipment and general operational costs at the Maidstone Arena and Silver Lake Regional Park.
"The donation helps keep costs down for the community members who use the park and the arena," said Justin Johner one of the volunteer co-ordinators of the project.
The weather co-operated as the crews worked from about lunch time on Thursday until dark. Combines were donated for the day by Agland, Redhead Equipment and Moody's Equipment with fuel donated by Hancock Petroleum. Andy Newsted Trucking and Lyle Sutherland Trucking hauled the grain to ADM in Lloydminster while QDN Holdings, Dean Blanchette and Ivor Mawle donated dinner. Refreshments and snacks were also provided by the Maidstone branch of Synergy Credit Union. Community members gave of their time, trucks and an auger.
The project saw 265 acres of canola grown and organizers say the yield should be 30 bushels per acre.
"Finally it's over," said Johner. "Everything went according to plan and everything went well."
Volunteers have decided to plant wheat next year and will be making further plans over the winter. If there are any questions or if anyone would like to help with this ongoing project please call Justin Johner at 893-2667 or Wendall Weston at 893-4510.
