As the Dekker Centre enters it's seventh month of operation, I find myself utterly dissapointed at the extemely short list of events that have taken place at the Dekker Centre.
I am fine with the theatrical productions, and we have seen a number (a small number, but a number) of quality touring acts.
I however have a very strong opposition to the constant flow of "tribute bands" that have "graced" the stage (six or seven now, I've lost count). While imitation may be the highest form of flattery, what these bands do is most assuredly not art. These bands do not deserve the right to play on our stage, to offer up their "tribute" while playing note for note music written and performed by truly talented people. Tribute artists are the bottom feeders of the performing industry, utterly detested by the artists they imitate, but clearly loved by the Dekker Centre Board of Directors.
But wait! I have a great idea! Let's continue booking tribute" artists, in fact let's only book tribute bands. North Battleford could become the "Tribute Band Capital of the World." People would flock from all corners just to see their favourite artists "immortalized" in tribute. We could even tie this in to the revitalization of the downtown core. Open "tribute" stores, selling "tribute" products such as Goochie handbags, Ralex watches, Tiffanie Jewelry. You get the point, I'm sure.
I feel that the board of directors must be held accountable for bringing in these Vegas style, over produced garbage entertainment.
We want art, not imitation art.
