Decked out in school colours and filled with pride, students at Ratushniak Elementary School in Maidstone took steps for a cause Friday.
The annual Terry Fox Day event began with an assembly where some of the community's most recognized and avid walkers, including the mayor, read some facts and figures about Fox.
The school event is popular across Canada and in the past five years alone Ratushniak Elementary School has raised nearly $5,000 to add to the national total.
"Terry Fox once said that it would be the youth who would carry on his dream of finding a cure for cancer. You are making that happen," said Principal Rod Kalmakoff.
The audience watched a short but emotional video about Fox and events across the country inspired by his run. Following the assembly the group made their way outside where they walked and ran around the high school track and then over the paths and around the lake at Delfrari-Victoria Park. Students and families returned to the school for a hot dog lunch and visiting before returning to the regular afternoon routine.
The participants enjoyed the beauty of the season and warm weather as they walked. The path was an easier and shorter road than Fox's, but it was in the hero's footsteps they walked to do their part to make his 30-year-old dream come true.
