Students square off for spelling bee

Things have been extremely slow in the news department in our area. However, I will report what I have got so far. It will be short and sweet. The Handi-Van Committee held the first bingo of the new year Jan. 14 in the seniors' centre at 7:30 p.m.

Kennedy Schaefer, Zach Gordon and Chelsea Bec were the top three spellers in the H. Hardcastle School CanSPell spelling bee Jan. 19. Zach advances to the next round.

Things have been extremely slow in the news department in our area. However, I will report what I have got so far. It will be short and sweet.

The Handi-Van Committee held the first bingo of the new year Jan. 14 in the seniors' centre at 7:30 p.m. This month the lucky winners of surprise packages were Allison Blanchette, Marion Ottas, Marion Lewis, Kay Mannix, Huguette MacGregor, Ron Bec, Shirley Godbout, Eddy Mannix, Janet Cadrain, and Lori Curry. Winning the blackout game for a turkey was Ron Bec. Thanks goes out to Annette Blaquiere for donating the prizes for the children's draws that were won by Carlie Mosimann and Zachery Curry. The next bingo will be Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the seniors' centre.

Thanks goes out to Patti Formanek for writing up the following for me:

Congratulations to Zachary Gordon who won the H. Hardcastle School CanSpell Spelling Bee. The bee was held in the library on the morning of January 19th, with these qualifying spellers taking part: Grade 6 - Chelsea Bec, Kesha Schaefer, Lyndon Goodall, Ryan Becotte, Kieran McConnell and Brittany Nedelec; Grade 7 - Cordell Beynon, Zach Gordon and Mason Blais; Grade 8 - Wyatt Malenfant, Kennedy Schaefer, Thomas Terpstra and Brittany Bec.

After 12 heart stopping rounds of words from the previously unseen spelling list, Zach remained undefeated, but all the spellers performed well leading up to the final round. Zach will now have to write yet another qualifying test of 120 words, and depending on his level of success, he will probably be going to Saskatoon to take part in the Saskatchewan CanSpell Spelling Bee sometime in March. We will keep you updated on the progress of our champion speller. Congratulations to all the grades who participated and thanks to judges Mrs. Gordon and Mr. Long. As participants, we all learned a little about the power of words and the skill of spelling. We look forward to more competition next year.

Congratulations to Pat Becotte of Meota who was the winner of the December trip of the month draw and also to the winners of $100, Dave and Sandra Benstead of Calgary. If you are interested in a ticket for this year's draws contact Danielle Troesch for more information.

The Edam Curling Club will be holding their annual ladies' bonspiel Feb. 11 and 12. For more information and to enter contact Barry Weitzel or Larry McDaid. Entry fee is $100 per rink. Come on out and check out the newly renovated facility.

I'm afraid that is it for this week. The weather has quickly taken a change for the warmer, but in my mind +3 the end of January is too warm. No doubt we will end up paying for it later, we usually do. Until next time, enjoy the outdoors while it is warm.
