Meota News: St. Walburg hosts blueberry festival Aug. 27

Summer visit to Ontario enjoyed by Darlene Payne.

MEOTA — Bridge played at the Pioneer Hall in the city found three tables in play. Top score went to Albert Blais and Vern Iverson. Second were Catriona Winterholt and Donna Scherman. Aug. 11 there were two tables and individual winners were Fraser Glen followed by Anna Waldbillig.

Temperatures in the southeast corner of British Columbia where some of my family is holidaying, reached near 40 C last week. Being by the water at Lake Koocanusa was a lifesaver.

The St. Walburg Blueberry Festival is being held Aug.27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is surely downsized from when we used to go for Friday supper and all day and evening Saturday.

The fall supper and fundraiser for the Catholic church in Edam is set for Sept. 25. Watch for posters.

Canasta played Aug. 12 found the table of six did the best as usual. Top team was Vern Iverson, Joyce Luckey and Albert Huys, with second high going to Linda Ard, David Sayers and Arlene Walker. It was a nice evening for visiting and sharing news.

Darlene Payne recently returned from Ontario where she had a visit with her daughter and two eldest grandchildren. Being the first flight Darlene has taken since before COVID, she packed lightly and was ready for travel hiccups. However the journey went smoothly aside from her return flight being delayed by a few hours.

While in Ontario, Darlene was in the area known as Prince Edward County, just two and a half hours from Toronto, but a world apart from the big city. The county is a tourist destination, famous for the endless sandy beaches on the shores of Lake Ontario, many wineries, craft breweries and cideries and tons of farmland surrounded by bodies of water. Farm fresh foods are plentiful in local restaurants and there are numerous roadside stands to stop at to buy fresh eggs, produce, honey, preserves and other goods. Most of these are based on the honour system where shoppers simply place money in a slot and take their purchase away.

Darlene had a great time exploring antique and handicraft shops, visiting farm stands, taking in cheese tasting at a local cheesemaker, going to a weekend farmers market, having a beach picnic, wading in the warm water, simply hanging out with her family and enjoying the views, the gardens and the wildlife at her daughter's property. The week flew by too quickly but Darlene was encouraged to be able to just put her mask on and take it off for a visit after such a long period where visiting wasn't possible.

Svend Christiansen is spending the rest of his recuperating days in Battlefords Union Hospital after breaking his hip in Alberta and spending about three weeks in the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. His recovery is coming along well and he's looking forward to getting back home soon.

Aug. 11 saw 23 golfers out braving a dark sky. Luckily the weatherman co-operated and golfers had a fun day on the links. The winning team where Lorne Ferguson, Lynn Boucher and Noreen Bernier with a 39. The consolation winners where Bernie Gregoire, Lucille Gregoire , Julliette Tebay and Eric Callbeck with a score of 43. A note of welcome news Svend is back in town and on the mend.
