Maidstone News: Gracious supporter of Sparks-Brownies remembered

Waseca hosting Community Day Saturday.

MAIDSTONE — This week we heard of the passing of Daphne McLaren, a kind and generous lady who was a pillar in our community. I have fond memories of Daphne interacting with Maidstone Sparks and Brownies. She came to help the girls learn to sew, bringing her tiny toy sewing machine which actually worked. What a hit it was. Our annual spring walk to Daphne’s was a favourite event. Of course, she just happened to bake too many buns that day and needed help eating them. We’d all sit on the lawn to listen to Daphne tell us her rendition of the Bleeding Heart Princess story. Everyone got a chance to act out the story themselves. Hundreds of bleeding heart blooms went home with our girls through the years. Daphne is missed and will always be remembered.

Love was in the air last weekend with three weddings in our community. Congratulations to all the newlyweds: Kaelin (Freyman) and Kody Kisling, Lisa (Wright) and Brandon Fendelet and Whitney (Weston) and Myles Coolidge. Happiness always.

Standard Hill Lakers gave dozens of fans what they came for as they won 4-3 in the first NSRBL game in Wilkie on Aug. 11. The second game is at Silver Lake on Tues. Aug. 16 (after my deadline but before the printing of this paper) so here’s hoping they’ve clinched the title. If the third game is needed, it will be in Wilkie on Aug. 17.

Maidstone Museum board held their monthly meeting Aug. 15 with seven members present. The last weekend of regular open hours is Sept. 4-5 (2 to 5 p.m.), so be sure to phone for a tour: 306-893-2890. Plans were put in place for the corn roast on Wednesday, Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the museum. Come out to take in a great meal for a great deal and enjoy visiting at the museum’s last community event of this season. Watch for posters around town. The next board meeting is Monday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the museum.

Maidstone Seniors’ Drop-In Centre bi-monthly meeting is Friday, Aug. 26 at noon at the centre. There will be a potluck lunch followed by the meeting. Everyone is welcome.

Waseca Community Day is Saturday, Aug. 20 with activities until 4 pm. Take in the pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m., vendors’ market, displays, demos, farm animal petting zoo, bouncy house, face painting, balloons, barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m. (burgers/hotdogs), bucket prizes 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., raffle draw 3 p.m., sandpile scramble 3:30 p.m. It’s sure to be fun for the whole family.

Speaking of fun, as summer camping draws to a close, you should check out this book: “Running to the Outhouse” by Willy Makit; illustrated by Betty Wont.

If you have any Maidstone area news, please let me know. Email [email protected], text 306-893-7378 or phone 306-893-2799. My deadline is Monday so please send it early.
