HUDSON BAY — COVID-19 has made event planning challenging for local towns and villages, especially around this year’s Canada Day celebrations.
The Town of Hudson Bay has changed things up this year in order to have fireworks for Canada Day and keep their celebration within Saskatchewan public health guidelines.
While COVID-19 restrictions do limit what communities can do for Canada Day, Jeanine Holowatuik, the town’s community development director, said they have asked the pyrotechnic company to shoot the fireworks higher in the area so the show is more visible across the town. This way people do not have to gather in one specific place in order to see the show but can view the display from a further distance.
“Because the fireworks are going to be high up in the sky and seen throughout the community, there is a whole different 360 degree view of the area that you can park safely and away from other people.â€
The fireworks will start at 9:45 p.m. and are sponsored by the Town of Hudson Bay, the RM of Hudson Bay, and the Celebrate Canada Grant.
Holowatuik is also busy planning a drive-in movie experience in August for the community. With COVID-19 shutting down movie theatres across the province, the Hudson Bay Community Modeon Theatre will be supplying the popcorn and drinks for the movie. While the event will be free, Holowatuik is asking everyone who is interested in attending to email or call the town office to get a car pass.
The drive-in experience is being sponsored by the McDonald's Family Food Store.
For both events, Holowatuik said the town is encouraging everyone to follow public safety guidelines when attending these events.
“We're relying on the community members to follow the proper social distancing rules and we're also encouraging the drive-in regulations as far as parties, using your own discretion to park at least five meters away from another vehicle, just to keep that safe distance.â€
