The Battlefords Music Teachers Association is hosting a performance by the well-known Meota Hobby Band.

The Meota Hobby Band performance, Sunday, Nov. 21 at Chapel Gallery at 3 p.m., is being hosted by BMTA as part of the Canada Music Week classic, celebrating its 50th season. The concert will feature talented music students and it will include works by many Canadian composers.

Meota Hobby Band's performance will evoke the big band era with favourites such as Moonlight Serenade, Way Down Yonder in New Orleans and Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Lloyd Beaumont, who retired to Metinota in 2001, co-ordinates the band. He started the band during the winter of 2005, after obtaining permission of the Do Drop In seniors' centre to gather like minded musicians on Tuesday mornings for a musical get together. The band has grown from five to 15 active members from Meota and surrounding area.

Present members include: Ben Byl, harmonica (Meota); Lloyd Beaumont, tenor sax (Metinota); Rose Delainey, keyboard (Meota), Junice Headley, keyboard (North Battleford); Wayne Jenner, euphonium (North Battleford); Bud Moor, tenor sax/vocal (North Battleford); Don Mitchell, clarinet/fiddle (Battleford); Louis Nedelec, percussion (Vawn); Alice Scott, tenor horn (Meota); Garnet Speer, lead clarinet/alto sax, music manager (Battleford); Karen Tyler, clarinet (North Battleford); Don Wakelin, rhythm guitar (Battleford); Lawrie Ward, drums/vocal (Meota); Martin Weber, bas guitar/vocal (Martinson Beach): Bob Zurowski, alto sax/vocal, sound production (Meota).

The Meota Hobby Band entertains at community or special events and at senior care homes. They are often joined by summer vacationers who bring their instruments with them. Waltzes, polkas and sing-along programs add to the musical diversity of this group.
