Thirty-four quilters and soon to be quilters met in the craft room at Don Ross Centre at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 for a business meeting of the Rivers' Edge Quilt Guild. It was nice to welcome new members as well as meet quilting friends not seen since June.
The conversation and discussion that ensued indicated the level of enthusiasm is high and all are eager to begin the new quilt season. The program committee has planned a challenging quilting year with a variety of projects for the months ahead.
Many members have UFOs and the president, Irene Greer, issued a challenge to see who could complete most of those unfinished objects by year end.
During September, many members will work on their own projects, likely some of those UFOs, while new members and those wishing to review quilting techniques will embark on Quilting 101, the learn to quilt sessions.
At coffee time, many members displayed the results of their summer quilting, including a wonderful collection of colourful quilts, table runners, bags, wall hangings and other quilted articles.
During the meeting, seven small comfort quilts were handed in by members in preparation of the Christmas donation to the Empty Stocking Fund and to Battlefords care facilities operated by Prairie North Health Region.
Winter is fast approaching and with it the inevitable fire season, so five larger quilts were donated to the Battleford Fire Department to be distributed to the victims of disasters such as fires or other catastrophes.
A One Million Pillowcase Challenge, led by the American Patchwork and Quilting magazine, has resulted in 100 pillowcases being made by members and these are already allocated to needy organizations within our community.
All of the above donations are part of the guild's mandate to make life a little more comfortable for others in the community.
It is not too late to join our group. New members are always welcome. See you at the next meeting Oct. 5 or call Irene 937-3551 or Barb 445-0486 for more information.
