KIPABISKAU LAKE – On Aug. 10, Waterski Wakeboard Saskatchewan will be hosting the provincial wakeboard competition at Kipabiskau Lake.
Daniel Gray, president of Kipabiskau Lake Water Sports Club (KWSC) and the VP of Sport for All for Waterski Wakeboard Saskatchewan (WSWS) said the club has hosted wakeboard provincials several times before, stemming back to 2004. Most recently, they have hosted provincials over the past four years.
Wakeboard provincials have been part of Waterski Wakeboard Saskatchewan since 2001, Gray said. “There have been around 20 active competitors in any given year; however, a recent resurgence in the sport has seen an increased number of participants.”
“Waterski Wakeboard Saskatchewan has been actively promoting the sport and increasing exposure to the sport in the province through our Travelling Water Sports Clinic and the recent introduction of the Sask Cable Park in Saskatoon.”
Gray said that Kipabiskau Water Sports Club has a number of athletes who have previous experience and will be competing in this year's event, saying Marin Monz, 14, who has been the provincial and national champion in his age category the past two years, was fourth place at the world championships last year in Portugal.
Davis Markwart, a 13 year old who won provincials and first place in her age category in the 2022 championship, is also a young lady to watch Gray said.
The competition will be hosted from Pleasantdale Beach on Kipabiskau Lake. Everyone is welcome to come and watch from the shoreline or venture out in their boats to watch from the water. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will run until around 3 p.m. There will be burgers and hot dogs along with refreshments for sale during the day.
Kipabiskau Water Sports Club will be hosting a 40th anniversary banquet following the provincial championship.
There are a variety of age categories to enter.
Provincial athletes will go to nationals, which are being held on the Â鶹ÊÓƵ Saskatchewan River in downtown Saskatoon on Aug. 16-18 in Victoria Park
