HUMBOLDT — Humboldt has won a public art award for the reconciliation mural installed on the north wall of its city hall.
On Oct. 5, the Creative City Network announced award winners for the 2023 Awards of Excellence program.
Humboldt was the recipient of the nationally recognized Public Art Sustainability Award for the mural. The mural was a collaborative creation by Saskatchewan Indigenous artist Kevin PeeAce and Humboldt youth.
PeeAce took inspiration for the work from conversations with 184 students from all four local schools. The conversations focused on reconciliation and were brainstorming sessions which invited the youth to draw, paint, or sketch their ideas on paper. Kevin incorporated the responses from the youth to create an overall design for a mural unique to Humboldt.
The unveiling of the mural took place during a community ceremony on National Indigenous Peoples Day in 2022.
“This is a time of reconciliation with the past. We are in the dawn of hope for a future of inclusiveness and brotherhood. This mural reflects themes of inclusion, community healing, and our commitment to Reconciliation,” said Humboldt Mayor Michael Behiel.
“The City of Humboldt thanks Kevin PeeAce, the Public Art Committee and all those who contributed to this remarkable project.”
The Creative City Network of Canada is a national non-profit organization made up of municipalities, organizations, and individuals working to support cultural development in their communities. The network facilitates knowledge-sharing professional development in the field of local cultural policy, planning, and research.
