Some Bjorkdale locals won big at the Slo-pitch National Championships in Kamloops, B.C.
Kody Dzurka, Reece Dzurka and Cindy Kuchmy all call Bjorkdale home. Their team finished second in Saskatchewan’s competitive division and earned a spot at the Kamloops tournament. Their team, the Northeast Stars, consisted of many players in the area: Scott Heisler, Calder Smith, Kody Dzurka, Kandace Little, Nathan Sunderland, Cassie Smith, Reece Dzurka, Shane Magnus, Chelsea Hustej, Cindy Kuchmy, Karissa Little, Brett Armstrong, and Ben Hamelin.
Slo-pitch National (SPN) has been around for over 25 years. It is a National non-profit organization in every province. Each province runs provincials at the end of August to determine teams playing in the national championship. They have a men’s, women’s and co-ed with competitive, intermediate and recreational divisions. Teams placing in the top three get a berth to Nationals held the following year in August. The location changes each year for the different programs and divisions. The Northeast Stars stars qualified to attend nationals either in Winnipeg or Moncton, NB.

Bjorkdale School has a new teacher this year in Joanne Schmitt.
Joanne grew up near Arborfield on a mixed cattle and grain farm, with three siblings and parents, Willie and Joyce Schmitt. She attended Arborfield school, then the University of Saskatchewan to complete her Education degree. She has been teaching for seven years and this year she’s the Grade 5/6 teacher at Bjorkdale School.
