HUMBOLDT — The Horizon School division announced and welcomed Garth Anderson to his first board meeting as the trustee for the Foam Lake-Ituna subdivision.
Sandy Gessner, Horizon’s returning officer, announced that Anderson was elected by acclamation on Nov. 3 in a byelection to fill the vacant position.
"Teaching and coaching have allowed me to change the course of many students’ lives over my career," Anderson said. "It is very satisfying when a young person sends you an email or chats with you about the impact you have had on the direction of their life."
Anderson and his wife Holly raised their daughters Carlli, Jessi, and Lindi in Foam Lake, where they have lived since 1988. Anderson has been involved in education as a teacher and principal since convocating from the University of Regina in 1981. Most recently, Anderson was principal of Horizon’s Distance Learning Centre until his retirement in 2023. In addition to being a dedicated educator, he has volunteered as both coach and official for youth athletics throughout his career. Anderson said that guiding principles will be based upon common sense and practicability.
Linda Mattock and Mark Fedak were also announced as Horizon School Division Board of Education’s Table Officers, as of the Nov.8 organizational meeting. Ms. Mattock was acclaimed as chair and Mr. Fedak was elected as vice-chair.
“I would like to thank my fellow trustees for their support. I take this role very seriously and look forward to continuing to advocate for the children of Horizon School Division,” said Mattock, who has served as trustee since 2016 and as Vice Chair since 2018. She represents Subdivision 2 which includes Annaheim, Lake Lenore, St. Brieux, Three Lakes, Humboldt Collegiate Institute, and Humboldt Public schools.
Fedak has served as Trustee since 2016 for Subdivision 4 which includes Drake, Englefeld, Muenster, Lanigan Elementary, Lanigan Central High, and Watson schools.
“I am grateful for the Board's support as we work together to advance Horizon’s vision and foundational goals,” said Mr. Fedak.
Horizon's Board of Education is made up of 14 publicly elected trustees representing as many subdivisions. The organizational meeting is held each calendar year, in accordance with the Education Act, 1995. At this meeting, trustees determine table officers, discuss indemnity, incidental rates, and other organizational items.
