BENDIG: William

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Mr. William Henry Bendig, 92 years of St. Mary鈥檚 Villa Humboldt, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2015 at his residence. William Henry Bendig was born on August 24, 1922 at Kandahar, SK to Henry and Mary (nee Ulmer) Bendig. He attended Lampard School until grade 8 and immediately following began his 70+ years as a famer. The only interruption to this career was a short stint in the army. On November 9, 1951 he married Theresa Schotts at Wynyard, SK. This union was blessed with four children. Until the children started school the family would spend the winters in B.C. working at various jobs, but when spring arrived William鈥檚 鈥減ull of the land鈥 would take them back to LeRoy. Bill was happiest on his farm in the open spaces of the prairies near LeRoy. He loved every aspect of farming, especially checking the crops in the area and doing field inspections! William thoroughly enjoyed socializing with other farmers and comparing notes on the progress of crops and crop prices. Once he purchased his home quarter he began a true Saskatchewan mixed farm, raising grain as well as cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and assorted pets over the years. He also maintained a large garden and a 5 acre yard. He saw many changes in the farming industry in his 92 years of life. He started farming in the era of horse drawn equipment and was pleased to progress to the use of motorized equipment as he disliked working with horses. Bill was proud to be a founding member of the LeRoy Co-op, holding member number 14 since its inception. He was also very active with the LeRoy Credit Union and sat on the Sask Wheat Pool committee. Life changed when Theresa passed away in 1969. Bill later married Mary Thoen on September 5, 1970 but she also passed away, in 1972. In his later years Si Work became his confidant, best friend and travel companion. They enjoyed many wonderful trips together. Bill was always very adventurous and ready to see something new. In 1960 he purchased his home quarter and resided there until his health began to fail, necessitating a move to Evergreen Country Home (assisted living) and ultimately to St. Mary鈥檚 Villa in October 2014. William will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his three children and two grandchildren: Donald (Caroline) Bendig and daughter Sarah of Prince Albert; Shirley Bendig (Bryan Pollries) of Humboldt; and Robert Bendig (Maggie Hamilton) and son Kohl of LeRoy; one sister and two brothers: Erna Wilks; Gus (Helen) Bendig; and Albert Bendig (Rose Stacey); sister-in-law, Anne Bendig; and by numerous members of the Schotts鈥 family. William was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Mary Bendig; daughter Gail Bendig (May 1997); 1st wife, Theresa Bendig; and 2nd wife, Mary Bendig; two sisters and two brothers: Hilda (Ben) Elke; Hadie (Dan) Schroeder; Sigfreid (Eva) Bendig; and Clarence Bendig; brother-in-law, Richard Wilks; and by numerous in-laws of the Schotts鈥 family. A Funeral Service was held at Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home on Saturday, June 6, 2015, led by Fran Gasmo-Bremner. Interment followed at LeRoy Public Cemetery. Memorial donations in Bill鈥檚 memory may be directed to Humboldt District Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to MALINOSKI & DANYLUIK FUNERAL HOME Humboldt.
