Mrs. Violet Jane Bieker (nee Sandy), 102 years of Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson, passed away on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Violet was born on February 12, 1908 at home in the RM of Stanley, near Morden, Manitoba to Stephen and Emma (nee Gutzke) Sandy. When she was three, the family moved to Tessier, SK. Violet grew up there and attended the local country school, after which she moved to Saskatoon and attended business/secretarial school. In November 1927, she married John Bieker. They made their first home together at Aimens where John worked in construction. Five children were born to them while living there. In 1939, the family moved to Englefeld where they began farming. Five more children were born there. In September 1949, Violet became a young widow when John was killed in an accident. Working very hard, she raised her large family and continued to operate the farm; feeding the pigs, milking the cows and planting and harvesting a large garden. In 1985, she retired from farming and moved to Humboldt. She resided there until 2003 when she became a resident at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson. Violet was a member of the CWL for many years. She also enjoyed planting and caring for her many flowers that beautifully decorated her yard.
