Richard "Dick" PapeNovember 22, 1933 - February 17, 2012

The death of Mr. Richard "Dick" Christian Pape of Saskatoon, SK, (and formerly of Muenster, SK), occurred at Samaritan Place, Saskatoon, on Friday, February 17, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 78 years of age. Dick was born on November 22, 1933, to Alphonse and Anne (nee Reiber) Pape at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Humboldt, SK. He grew up on the family farm in the Muenster district and attended St. James School in the area. After completing his Grade 8 education there, he helped his father full-time on the farm. Dick also enrolled in a 52-week Automotive and Diesel correspondence class through the Chicago Vocational Training Course and, following his practical training in Edmonton, AB, attained his journeyman automotive status. When his parents retired from farming in 1964, Dick took over the operation. The following year, he also began working at Grest Motors in Humboldt, SK. In 1967, Dick married Doreen Solar. Four children, two daughters and two sons were born to them. In 1972, Grest Motors closed their business. Dick joined the staff at Cash Motors, where he was employed until April 1974. At that time, with the help of neighbors, he erected a pre-fab home on the farm. After completing that venture and also opening up 50 acres of land, in 1977, Dick again put his mechanical talents to work and began employment with Coyle Chev-Olds which, eventually, became Dahlen Motors. He retired in 1982. With the onset of computers in homes and businesses, Dick enrolled in a computer class at Carlton Trail Community College and also attained a G.E.D. diploma. Over the years, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Sask. Wheat Pool, where he also served as chairman of the board. Dick continued farming until 2010. At that time, he sold the farm and moved to Saskatoon to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Dick will be lovingly remembered by his four children and four grandchildren: Lynn Hrbachek (fiancé David Glennon) of Martensville, SK, and children Tyler Hrbachek, Elliot Glennon and Faith Glennon; Charlene Pape (fiancé Perry Jones) of Victoria, BC; Ryan Pape (Colleen) of Saskatoon; and Russell (Jaclyn) Pape of Martensville and son Coen; sister, Agnes Syphers of Airdrie, AB; brother, Robert Pape of Vancouver, BC; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Anne (nee Reiber) Pape. The Prayer Service for Dick was held at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Friday, February 24, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. Scripture readers were Dorothy Hinz and George Hinz. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Emile April. Others taking part were: Tyler Hrbachek, crossbearer; George Hinz and Dorothy Hinz, scripture readers; and Joyce Huber, intentions; Lynn Hrbachek and Charlene Pape, giftbearers. Music ministry was provided by organist Dolores Hinz and the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Honorary pallbearers were "friends who shared in Dick's life." Active pallbearers were Keith Hinz, George Hinz, Ron Hinz, Joe Hinz, Darren Pokolm, and Jim Siegel. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
