Mary Suchy:
January 7, 1919 - March 5, 2013
The death of Mrs. Mary (nee Stadnichuk) Suchy of Birch Manor, Bethany Pioneer Village, Middle Lake, SK, (and formerly of Humboldt, SK), occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. She was 94 years of age. Mary was born on January 7, 1919, to Peter and Annie (nee Huculak) Stadnichuk at home on their farm in the Guernsey district. She grew up there, attained her primary education at a rural school in the area, and later continued her education in Lanigan, SK, while living with her sister Polly there. Eventually, Mary met her future husband, Steve Suchy, who was working on her dad's threshing crew. Steve was also the choir leader at the local church and another of his attractions to Mary was the way she sang. In November 1935, they were married at a church in the Guernsey district. Mary and Steve began their life together in Gronlid, SK, where they were partners in a grocery store with Mary's sister and brother-in-law, Polly and Harry Piniach. They later returned to Guernsey where Steve worked on the railroad, and then to the Burr district where they farmed. Their union was blessed with three sons and one daughter: Wally in 1937, Don in 1940, Julius in 1948, and Betty in 1952. Mary loved her role as a homemaker for her husband and children, and all that entailed. She really enjoyed baking and especially had a passion for chocolate. Everyone in the family inherited her sweet tooth, and they were always allowed to have dessert - even if they didn't finish their meal! Steve passed away in 1964. Mary continued to live on the farm until December 31, 1965, when she moved to Humboldt. In 1974, she bought a small house on 10th Street and had an addition put on in 1987. During those years, Mary worked as a clerk at various stores until becoming a nurses' aide at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, where she was employed until retiring in the late 1970s. Much of her time was spent outdoors, which she loved. The hours would fly by as Mary went for leisurely walks downtown, lovingly tended to her vegetable and flower gardens, and cut her grass, which she was still doing at the age of 90. Visits from her family, especially her grandchildren, were highlights in her day. She was always interested in keeping up-to-date with their lives and various activities. She was very young at heart, in her actions and her ever-present sense of humor, and continued to reside in her home until February 25, 2012, when she became a resident of Bethany Pioneer Village. Mary will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by two children: Don (Mary) Suchy of Norquay, SK; and Betty (Ardean) Bregenser of Pilger, SK; daughters-in-law: Carol Suchy of Guernsy, SK; and Marg Huhn of Edmonton, AB; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen (Wilf) Eldrige of Jacksonville, FL; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Steve Suchy; two sons: Wally Suchy and Julius Suchy; parents, Peter and Annie (nee Huculak) Stadnichuck; three brothers: John (Nellie) Stadnichuk, Steve (Doris) Stadnichuk, and Ted (Kaye) Stadnichuk; two sisters: Polly (Harry) Piniach and Margaret Stadnichuk; and by in-laws in Ukraine. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Monday, March 11, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Gregory Roth. Others taking part were: Heather Bregenser, crossbearer; Colleen Robinson and Debbie Humphries, scripture readers; Stephanie Suchy, intentions; Renee Suchy and Patty Suchy, giftbearers; and Dolores Leedahl, memorial table attendant. Music ministry was provided by members of the St. Augustine Parish Choir. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Mary's life". Active pallbearers were Rick Suchy, Ron Suchy, Russ Suchy, Curtis Bregenser, Ryan Bregenser, and Joe Gigantelli. Interment followed at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery in the Wolverine district. Memorial donations may be directed to the St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery Fund.
