POPPEL: Lawrence Joseph June 18, 1930 - September 23, 2013
The death of Mr. Lawrence Joseph Poppel of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Monday, September 23, 2013. He was 83 years of age. Lawrence was born on June 18, 1930, to Franz and Margaret (nee Beumler) Poppel at home on the family farm in the Pilger district. He grew up there and attended Colorado Rural School. Lawrence then worked on the farm until 1949, when he began his career with the Department of Highways construction department in rural areas. With the exception of his employment with the R.M. of Three Lakes from 1958 to 1959, he continued working for the Department of Highways, transferring to their maintenance division in Humboldt in 1979. In 1982 Lawrence retired, after many fulfilling years. He had loved farming, but was very proud of his achievements while working for the Department of Highways and shared many interesting stories of his experiences during that career. On November 9, 1963, Lawrence married Barbara Yungwirth. They were kindred spirits - wherever you saw one, you saw the other, especially going for drives around town and the local rural areas, going to play bingo, attending auction sales, and visiting on coffee row at least a few times a day, where Lawrence loved to joke and tease. Lawrence was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed curling and bowling. Although he and Barbara never had any children of their own, their nieces and nephews were like children to them and filled a big part of their life. Lawrence will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara (nee Yungwirth) Poppel of Humboldt; two brothers and one sister: Joseph Poppel of Miniota, MB; Lorraine Pollier of Leamington, ON; and Mike (Barbara) Poppel of Pilger; and by numerous nieces and nephews who were so special to him. He was predeceased by his parents, Franz and Margaret (nee Beumler) Poppel; one sister, Margaret Poppel (in infancy); one sister-in-law, Mary Poppel; and by one brother-in-law, George Pollier. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Charleen Eisner, crossbearer; David Poppel and Holly Kaminski, scripture readers; Sarah Berting, intentions; Kimberly and Deklen Poppel, giftbearers; Margaret Martin and Donna Bendig, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Lawrence's life". Active pallbearers were Ronnie, Ross, Wayne, Mark, and Melinda Poppel, and Wendy Wegleitner. Interment followed at St. Augustine R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the St. Augustine Parish Building Fund. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
