Lawrence "Colin" Smith
1930 - 2013
It is with great sadness for the family to announce the sudden passing of Lawrence "Colin" Smith on May 23, 2013 which occurred unexpectedly at his home. Colin was born in Humboldt July 18, 1930 to Clara and Lorne Smith. Colin is survived by his loving family: his wife of nearly 60 years (June 13) Vera Dorothy Smith; his four children: Ken (Carol) Smith of Regina, SK, Marilyn (Joe) Steele of Cambridge ON., Jill Franklin (Alan Witt) of Major, SK and Elmer Smith of Watson, SK; his grandchildren: Parker Smith, Amber (Greg) MacNeil, Kimberly, Dale Michelle and Matthew Steele, Logan Franklin, Jayleen (great grandchild Karter), Ashley and Roxanne Smith. Colin leaves to mourn his sisters: Florence Zahar of San Francisco, Olga Baker of Drayton Valley, Shelia (Doug) Root of Cupar, Mary Smith of Prince Albert and his brothers: Raymond (Mona) Smith of Nanaimo, Wayne (Corinne) Smith of White Swan Lake, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Colin moved to Prince Albert at a very young age and began driving truck throughout Northern Saskatchewan mainly with Dawson's Transport. Colin continued to have the trucking fever through his life as many times he would take his young family on an impromptu trip for coffee which may end after three hours of driving; they and he, never knew where they would end up. Vera and Colin owned and operated Riverside Grocery in Hazeldell for over thirty years. Colin also worked many years in a part-time capacity then eventually full time for Western Grocers until his retirement. Colin was an outdoorsman and fisherman, the sign over the porch to the house read "Here lives a Fisherman with the Catch of his Life." He loved going to Emma Lake cabin with family and grandchildren fishing trips in Northern Saskatchewan with friends and family and exploring the back country on quads. He enjoyed carpentry work which was evident in the many homes that he had built or renovated including the home he retired in. Colin was very active in his church community. He was a very active senior within the Heritage Senior Center: He played bridge many times a week, and would take fellow card players on road trips to various Bridge tournaments around the province. Public viewing was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Gray's Funeral Chapel, Prince Albert, SK. Funeral Service was held at the Prince Albert Alliance Church, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Mark Bergen officiating. Interment was held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. It is the family's request that those preferring to place memorials in lieu of other tributes may do so to the Prince Albert Heritage Club. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
