SVAB: Kathleen Ann
June 18, 1924 - February 27, 2014
The death of Mrs. Kathleen (nee Demeter) Svab of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Thursday, February 27, 2014. She was 89 years of age. Kathleen was born to John and Kathleen (nee Magosi) Demeter in the St. Brieux district on June 18, 1924 and attended Ben Loyal school in the Meskenaw district until grade 8. She worked as a hired help for the local farmers. Kathleen married Joseph Svab on April 28, 1942, in St Philips (Little Moose) R.C. Church west of St. Brieux. They began their life together on the farm, and in 1945 were blessed with a son, Chris. Joe and Katie purchased more land in the area and eventually farmed a section and ran a mixed farming operation. In 1951, the family moved to Middle Lake. In 1953, they moved back to the farm and six years later they built a new house there. They continued to reside on the farm until 1980, when they rented out their land and built a house in Middle Lake. In 1999, they both relocated to the Pioneer Village at Bethany. Katie was very organized and orderly. She would always have a meal or baking, of which there was always plenty, to offer company, no matter what time of day they stopped by. Katie loved gardening, painting, ceramics, crocheting, knitting and bowling. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. Katie will be remembered by her son Chris (Cheryle) Svab of Moose Jaw, SK; three granddaughters: Trudy (Raymond) Shingoose of Yorkton, SK, Glenda Weslak of Moose Jaw, and Nicole (Sam) Morrison of Moose Jaw; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three siblings: Julie Mastronardi of Windsor, ON; Jim (Laurie) Demeter of Humboldt; and Edith (George) Kushneriuk of Prince Albert, SK; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Svab (2006), parents John and Kathleen (nee Magosi) Demeter, siblings and in-laws: Mary (Nelson) McGrath, Betty (Gunnard Jonsson) (Ken) Paquette, John (Eva) Demeter, and Alfred Mastronardi. A Memorial Tea for Kathleen was held at Canadian Martyrs Roman Catholic Church Hall on Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. A Private Family Graveside Service was held.
