Mr. Joseph “Joe” Anthony Plag of Humboldt, SK, passed away at Humboldt District Hospital on Wednesday, June 24, 2015. He was 80 years of age. Joe was born on October 19, 1934, to Henry and Josephine (nee Nordick) Plag at Bad Honnef, Germany, where he was raised and attained his education. At the age of 14, he enrolled in the bricklaying course at a trade school, and became the fourth generation of bricklayers in the family. In 1953, Joe immigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax on May 4th and, after a five-day train trip, he reached his final destination, Englefeld, SK. During the first two years, he worked at various places in the province. In 1955, Joe moved to British Columbia, initially making his home in Nanaimo and then in Vancouver. On December 1, 1956, he married Stella Radoux. Four children, twin sons and two daughters, were born to them. Joe and his family moved to Englefeld in 1975. They owned and operated Nagel’s Hardware Store for five years. After selling it, Joe went into business with his sons, who became the fifth generation bricklayers. On October 11, 1997, Joe married Helen (nee Niekamp) Witt at St. Gregor, SK. They resided there until 2012, when they moved to Humboldt. Over the years, Joe enjoyed woodworking, photography, reading, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Joe is survived by his wife of 17 years, Helen (nee Niekamp) (Witt) Plag of Humboldt; four children and their families: Alan(Judy) Plag of Humboldt, SK, and family, Vanessa Ollerich and children Chloe, Corbin and Clayton, and Vincent Plag; Don(Cindy) Plag of Humboldt, SK, and family, Michael(Amy) Plag and children Elie and Heinrich, and Charmaine(Richard) Penner and children Liam and London; Joanne(Hugh) Schwartz of Englefeld, SK, and family, Derek(Sara) Manz; and Maureen(Bob) Steffenhagen of Regina, SK, and family, Joseph Steffenhagen(Tracy), Kristen Steffenhagen(Joel), and Kimberley Steffenhagen; seven step-children and their families: Dale Witt(close friend Claudette Moses) of Edmonton, AB; Brian Witt of Wolseley, SK; Brenda(Ralph) Graf of Humboldt and family, Rachelle(Russell) Gehlen and their children Raina and Rowan, Alissa Graf, and Caitlynn Graf; Kathleen(Gord) Bornhorst of St. Gregor, SK, and family, Brock Bornhorst, Dylon Bornhorst and Chet Bornhorst; Lyle Witt of LeRoy, SK; Gerard(Barb) Witt of Meadow Lake, SK, and family, Cydney Witt, Tatum Witt and Deanna Morrison; and Wayne Witt of Biggar, SK. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Josephine (nee Nordick) Plag. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Dylon Bornhorst, crossbearer; Chet Bornhorst and Michael Plag, scripture readers; Caitlynn Graf, intentions; Tatum Witt and Corbin Ollerich, giftbearers; Dora Kiefer and Alice Radoux, communion ministers; and Alissa Graf, Brock Bornhorst and Cydney Witt, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Joe’s life. Urnbearers were Rachelle Gehlen and Kristen Steffenhagen. A private family interment service followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt.
