DUST, Joseph John Bernard
January 9, 1922 - December 30, 2012
The death of Mr. Joseph "Joe" John Bernard Dust of Bruno, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, SK, on Sunday, December 30, 2012. He was 90 years of age. Joe was born on January 9, 1922, to Bernard and Anna (nee Kramer) Dust at home on their farm near Bruno. He grew up there and attended Bruno Elementary School. After completing Grade 9, Joe stayed home to help on the family's dairy farm. On November 6, 1942, he was drafted into the Canadian Armed Forces and spent time in New Brunswick, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Holland, Belgium, Germany and England. After being discharged in November 1945, Joe returned home and continued farming with his father. On June 24, 1947, he married Anne Bauer in St. Bruno R. C. Church, Bruno. Four children, two daughters and two sons, were born to them. In 1952, Joe and Anne purchased the family dairy farm, which they operated retiring into Bruno in 1980. Sadly, Anne died shortly after. Joe kept himself occupied doing odd jobs for the R.M. of Bayne and the town of Bruno. On August 2, 1986, he married Elizabeth (nee Wurst) Hegedus. Joe and Elizabeth lived in Bruno and, for 12 years, took care of the St. Bruno R.C. Cemetery. That was very important to Joe, as his father had helped to develop the cemetery and planted many trees there. Joe and Elizabeth both enjoyed traveling and took motor home trips to various locations all over North America. Always ready and willing to travel, if someone mentioned going on a trip, Joe would say: "What day are we leaving?". Other favorite pastimes included dancing (he never missed a polka fest), spending time at the Bruno Friendship Centre, singing with the Bruno Melodies, playing cards, going on gambling trips, watching hockey and broomball at the local skating rink, making ropes, tinkering in his shop, and looking after the chickens. Joe always looked forward to attending the 4-H events and the Prince Albert Exhibition, where he would drive in the senior heavy horse class; this past year, he received a standing ovation from the crowd. A true "people person" with a good sense of humor, he loved to visit and have a good time. Joe was always teasing someone and would say: "I love to dish it out but I like to get it right back too". Over the years, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was honored to receive the distinguished Honor A Veteran plaque from the 4th. Degree Knights for recognition of what he did for the rights of his country. He was also a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, and always attending the Remembrance Day services was very significant to him. Joe will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his four children and eight grandchildren: Marjorie (Anton) LaBrash and family, Leanne LaBrash (Hushton Block), Kelly (Liza) LaBrash, and Rochelle (Marc) Mansiere; Mervin (Val) Dust and family, Wayne (Twilya) Dust, Sasha (Blaine) Pike, and Travis (Sarah) Dust; Arden (Debbie) Dust and family, Krista (David) Erixon and Kelsey Dust; and Cheryl Dust; step-son, Larry (Linda) Hegedus and family, Lorrie (Brad) Hegedus and Lyle Hegedus; 10 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson; one sister, Rosella Zimmer; two sisters-in-law: Noreen Dust and Doreen Dust; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Anne (nee Bauer) Dust; second wife, Elizabeth (nee Wurst) (Hegedus) Dust; parents, Bernard and Anna (nee Kramer) Dust; four brothers: Louis Dust, Alois (Rita) Dust, Norbert Dust, and Leonard (Margaret) Dust; two sisters: Irene (Alan) Pollmeier and Marie (John) Warick; brother-in-law, Frank Zimmer; and by nephew, Gary Dust. The Prayer Service for Joe was held at St. Bruno R.C. Church, Bruno, on Friday, January 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m., officiated by Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Scripture readers were Rochelle Mansiere and Wayne Dust and the eulogy was delivered by Randy Warick. Music ministry was provided by organist Denise Krentz and the St. Bruno Parish Choir. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Bruno R.C. Church on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., celebrated by Fr. Joseph Ackerman, OSB. Others taking part were: Kelly LaBrash, cross bearer; Krista Erixon and Kelsey Dust, scripture readers; Kendal Bodnarchuk, intentions, Gloria Schlosser and Margaret Hegedus, gift bearers. Music ministry was provided by organist Denise Krentz, violinist Dean Bernier, and the St. Bruno Parish Funeral Choir. An honor guard was formed by members of the Royal Canadian Legion Humboldt Branch #28, accompanied by a musical tribute by trumpeter Tom Dust. Honorary pallbearers were "all those who shared in Joe's life". Active pallbearers were Kim Dust, Ken Dust, Bill Dust, Cecil Dust, Jerome Warick and Steve Bodnarchuk. Interment followed at St. Bruno R.C. Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Bruno Friendship Centre or the St. Bruno R.C. Church Building Fund.
