HOFFMAN: Evelyn Verna Beatrice (nee Tataryn)

May 16, 1926 - September 22, 2013

The death of Mrs. Evelyn Verna Beatrice (nee Tataryn) Hoffman of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Sunday, September 22, 2013. She was 87 years of age. Evelyn was born on May 16, 1926, to Daniel and Emma Mary (nee Bjorgum) Tataryn at Humboldt. She grew up there and attained her formal education at Humboldt Public School and Humboldt Collegiate Institute, where she graduated in June 1944. Evelyn worked at the Land Titles office and later part-time for various oil exploration companies. On September 27, 1958, she married Warren Hoffman in St. John's Lutheran Church, Humboldt. In February 1959, Evelyn retired from her position at the Land Titles office and became a full-time homemaker. She and Warren were blessed with a son, Philip Edward, on April 10, 1960. Over the years, Evelyn was very involved in her church and community. As a member of St. John's Lutheran Church she served on the council, as financial secretary, and was involved with the St. John's Ladies' Group. In addition, Evelyn was a member of the Carlton Trail Ski Club where she served as secretary-treasurer for several terms, was secretary of the local Nature Club, and served for several years on the auxiliary of the Scout group. She and Warren devoted 18 years to surveying loons at Anglin Lake where they spent many happy weeks at their cabin. An excellent seamstress, she spent many fulfilling hours sewing clothing for her son, her nieces and nephews, and also made square dance outfits. Other favorite activities included doing jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, and word puzzles. One of her greatest passions was reading; she possessed an unquenchable thirst for lifelong-learning and gained a vast general knowledge covering many topics from the innumerable books she read. Evelyn's family meant the world to her. She was a favorite aunt of the Tataryn kids and the addition of grandchildren to the family circle filled her life with great pride and joy. Evelyn will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband of almost 55 years, Warren Hoffman of Humboldt; one son Philip Hoffman (Cheryl Van Blaricom) of Whitehorse, YT; two grandchildren, Shea and Bryn; one brother, Rick (Alice) Tataryn of Anglin Lake, SK; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Daniel and Emma Mary (nee Bjorgum) Tataryn; and by two brothers and two sisters: Edward, Mary Ann, Thomas, and Edna "Toots". The Funeral Service was held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Humboldt, on Saturday, October 12, 2013, at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Robert Grout. The urnbearers were Shea and Bryn Hoffman, and the eulogy was delivered by Susan and Joe Tataryn. Music ministry was provided by organist Elaine Siegel. Honorary pallbearers were "all Evelyn's nieces and nephews". Interment followed at Humboldt Public Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to either the St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
