The passing of Mr. Eugene Hopfauf of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital, Humboldt, on Friday, July 10, 2015, at the age of 89 years. Eugene was born on September 23, 1925 to Karl and Margarete (nee Müller) Hopfauf in Karlsrhue (Ukraine) U.S.S.R. After the war, Eugene and his parents were reunited in Poland where they lived for 12 years until the death of his mother. Eugene and his father immigrated to Canada in 1957, settling in Regina. On June 29, 1968, Eugene married Bernadette Gleason. He established a successful career as a carpenter in the Regina area, retiring in 1989. The family moved from Regina to Lumsden in 1977, and in 2010 Eugene and Bernadette moved to Humboldt. Eugene is survived by the love of his life and best friend of 48 years, Bernadette (nee Gleason) Hopfauf of Humboldt; three children: Helen (Vincent Lo Monaco) of Ottawa, ON; Joseph (Nicole Syrenne) Hopfauf of Humboldt; and Erika (John Rice) of Penetanguishene, ON. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Declan and Marcus Lo Monaco, Dana and Erik Hopfauf, and Jacob and Madeline Rice. Eugene was predeceased by his parents Karl and Margarete; and infant brother Peter. The Prayer Service for Eugene was held at Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, on Monday, July 13, 2015, at 7:30 p.m., presided by Marie Louise Ternier-Gommers. The scripture reader was Erik Hopfauf and the eulogy was delivered by Vincent Lo Monaco. Music ministry was provided by organist Dolores Hinz. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine R.C. Church, Humboldt, on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Madeline Rice, crossbearer; Dana Hopfauf, urnbearer; Joseph Hopfauf and Erik Hopfauf, scripture readers; Erika Rice and Helen Hopfauf, intentions; Declan Lo Monaco and Marcus Lo Monaco, giftbearers; George and Gladys Burton, memorial table attendants. Music ministry was provided by organist Dolores Hinz and the St. Augustine Parish Funeral Choir. Memorial donations may be directed to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Unit.
