It is with deep sadness that we announce that Esther Campbell passed away in Calgary surrounded by her family on October 8th at the age of 93 years. Esther was born in Wynyard to Kristjan and Anna Bergthorson and was the youngest of six children, three brothers and two sisters. She completed her education in Wynyard and then attended the Success Business College in Prince Albert. She worked as a secretary for Enerson Motors in Wynyard and then as an Agricultural Representative secretary. In 1947 Esther married Victor Campbell, also from Wynyard. They moved to Humboldt where Vic owned an auto body shop, a Texaco service station and eventually the John Deere dealership. They had three children; two daughters and a son. Vic and Esther lived in Humboldt from 1947 until 2008 when they moved to Calgary to be closer to family. In addition to raising her family, Esther was active in her community. She was a long time member of Westminster United Church, as well as the United Church Women of which she served both as President and Secretary. Esther was church organist for over thirty years, a position she dearly loved. She also served for several years as Adjudicator’s secretary during the annual Music Festival. Esther was also a member of the Curling and Golf Clubs for many years as well as the Elizabeth’s Hospital Auxiliary and Friends of the Museum. Music was a very important part of Esther’s life. She spent many hours seated in front of the piano or organ improving her skills, or simply playing for the joy it brought to her. She and Vic spent many enjoyable evenings with friends playing bridge and other card games. Esther was a member of one or more bridge clubs most of her adult life. She loved to challenge her family members to a chosen game of cards. She loved to win, but would also lose graciously. Esther was a very caring and thoughtful woman. She was always willing to help others and made sure that friends were not alone during holidays and special celebrations.Ìý Esther is lovingly remembered by her family; son, Garry Campbell of Vancouver, daughters, Dianne (Sean) Thomas and Janice (Scott) Thompson of Calgary and her grandchildren Erin (Scott) Stevenson of Trenton, Brian and Claire Thomas and Hannah Thompson, all of Calgary. Esther was predeceased by her husband Victor Campbell in 2009. She was the last surviving member of her large Icelandic family of three brothers, Elmo, Fredrick and Bjarni and two sisters Olina and Grace. The funeral service will be held at Westminster United Church in Humboldt, SK on Oct. 24, 2015 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Brenda Curtis. Pierson’s Funeral Service Ltd. Calgary, AB and Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
