POPPEL: Edward Louis

April 8, 1934 - October 29, 2014

Edward Louis Poppel, age 80, of Middle Lake, SK, passed away peacefully at his home on October 29, 2014. Edward was born to Martin and Rose (nee Beumler) Poppel on April 8, 1934 in Humboldt. He attended St. Bernard's School near the family farm east of Pilger. Edward began his career with SaskPower in 1951, at the age of 17, joining the line crew first bringing power into Pilger. He then went on building power lines into Tisdale and Melfort. While working in Birch Hills, he met the love of his life, Lillian Fedoruk. They married on November 16, 1957 in Wakaw. Their young family began to grow and the new parents moved on to live and work in Bruno, then later to Middle Lake. Edward was honoured to move the family to his late father's homestead in 1978 while working out of the Humboldt office. He retired from SaskPower in 1987 to pursue his greatest passion of farming. Sadly, Edward's wife Lillian passed away after a short illness one year later. This was a difficult time for Edward as he mourned the loss of his gentle wife who was a constant companion, but Edward found great contentment while tilling the soil on his land with an open cab tractor. He had a tender affection for all animals, large and small. He could often be seen on weekends driving a team of horses hitched to various styles of wagons. He would find stray dogs and cats on his travels and bring them home to claim as his own. He also fed chickadees outside of his picture window for many years so he could watch them throughout the cold winter days. Edward was a humble and easy-going man who enjoyed a vibrant and fun-loving social life. He would assign for himself a few daily tasks, and upon completion, drive off to check in with his family and friends in communities near and far by choosing a different direction of travel each day. Edward privately conducted his faith by observing broadcasted Roman Catholic Mass in the morning and praying his cherished rosary beads at night. Edward was an adoring husband of his wife, a devoted father to his children, a proud grandfather to his grandchildren, and a delightful friend of many. Edward's passing was 26 years to the day of his beloved wife's funeral mass and burial at St. Bernard's R.C. Church. Edward is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Lori (Thomas) Senga of Lanigan, and their children, Pamela, Craig, and Heather; son, Darren (Leanne) Poppel of Humboldt, and their son, Scott; daughter, Angela Poppel of Middle Lake; four sisters: Marie Wehage of Middle Lake, Caroline Altman of Cudworth, Veronica Matsalla and Anne Wozney both of Saskatoon; and numerous extended family members and friends. Edward was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (nee Fedoruk) Poppel (1988); granddaughter, Tianna Poppel (2006); parents, Rose (nee Beumler) Poppel (1940) and Martin Poppel (1969); brothers: John Poppel (1934) and Bernard Poppel (2012); sister-in-law, Norma (nee Louttit) Poppel (2010); brothers-in-law: Walter Wehage (2008), Edward Matsalla (2011) and Allan Altman (2013). A Prayer Service was held at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Pilger, SK, on Monday, November 3, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. presided by Luella Bregenser. Organist was Ardel Hautzinger and the scripture readers were Dolores and Patrick Pomedli. The eulogy was delivered by Janett Wojak. The Funeral Mass was offered at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Pilger, on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Others taking part were: Ricky Altman, crossbearer; Darcy Wozney and Randy Altman, scripture readers; Janice Fletcher, intentions; Lori and Thomas Senga, giftbearers; Ardel Hautzinger and Luella Bregenser, music ministry; and Marianne Bautz, memorial table attendant. The urnbearers were Pamela Senga, Craig Senga, Heather Senga, Scott Poppel, and Tianna Poppel. Honorary pallbearers were "all the people who shared in the joys of Ed's life". Interment will be held at St. Bernard's R.C. Cemetery, Pilger District, SK, at a later date. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Bernard's R.C. Cemetery Fund.
