STANGEL: It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Delmar Stangel from a stroke on September 19, 2011. His passing came exactly two weeks after the death of his mother Rosemary Stangel. Delmar was born in Humboldt on January 3, 1949 to Clarence and Rosemary Stangel. He was a brother to Jim and Mary Lou. He grew up on a small mixed farm midway between Lake Lenore and Annaheim. Delmar attended Leavenworth School, a small one room country school that was located about 2 miles from his home. He completed several years of school there and then continued his education in Annaheim. After graduation he began working in the Post Office in Humboldt. He later transferred to Regina. After several years he took up a position with Russel Steel in Regina and worked for them for about 3 years. Delmar eventually began employment with Case International and worked in the wholesale credit department. He did considerable travelling around the province visiting Case dealerships. He spent the rest of his working career with Case and retired at the end of 2005 after 27 years with the company. In 1970 he married Karen Provost. They had 4 children; Jesse (1974), Mark (1975), Lisa (1977) and Debbie (1979). Delmar and Karen later divorced. In 1995 he met Eleanor Guskjolen and they became close friends; living together for the past 15 years. At the time of his death, he and Eleanor were engaged to be married. Delmar had a very unique sense of humor. He was a master at dishing out short quips and one-liners that always brought a smile to those around him. He was usually unpredictable but sometimes a little smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eye would signal that a smart remark was on the way. Delmar had a motorcycle and enjoyed roaming around rural Saskatchewan, visiting "places that used to be". He was always inquisitive and liked to look at "old" things. Delmar loved to collect. He started a coin and stamp collection at an early age. He later became interested in antiques and collectibles that needed restorative work. He built up a large collection of oil cans, cream cans, sewing machines, gas pumps and maps as well as many other unusual items like cistern pumps, mower lids, inspection plates and old documents. During the summer, Delmar could often be seen driving around the countryside visiting old town sites as well as abandoned farms. He would stop and talk to strangers and ask them questions about towns that had disappeared. He spent countless hours tramping around, checking out buildings and walking through pastures, often tripping in gopher and badger holes. He scoured old buildings for items of interest. Often he found discarded articles that needed restorative work. He would take them home and sit down to work many hours, filling, sanding and painting to bring the article back to original condition. Would you believe that he used a toothpick to do most of his painting? That is how detailed he was with his work. His specialty was signs. In his garage, he had many Coke signs that he had restored through many intense hours of detailed work. Old tobacco product signs and dealership signs were also a favorite. He enjoyed going south in the winter and basking in the sun. Most afternoons in Lake Havasu, Arizona were spent by the swimming pool. He always liked to take his CD player so he (and everyone else) could listen to the music. He also liked to go and watch the "snow birds" play ball. Delmar is survived by his fiancee Eleanor Guskjolen of Regina, SK and his children; Jesse (Tracy Carr); Debbie and daughter Maria; Lisa (Martin) Park; and his brother Jim (Colette) Stangel of Assiniboia and their children; Beth (Glenn) Groskopf and children Sheldon, Kayla, Adam, Katie, Josh; Jamie (Shawna) and children Karley, Bailey; Tracey (Blaine Senchuk); He also leaves to mourn the two sons of Eleanor; Travis (Sharleen) Guskjolen and Nathan (Katherine) Guskjolen and their children Sarah and Tyson as well as many cousins and two aunts and three uncles. Delmar was predeceased by his father Clarence Stangel (2007), mother Rosemary Stangel (2011), sister Mary Lou (1954) and son Mark (1975) and the mother of his children, Karen Stangel (2006). A Graveside Service will be held at St. Ann's Cemetery, Annaheim, SK at a later date, likely in the spring of 2012.
