HINZ: Daniel Francis

December 20, 1924 - November 1, 2013

The death of Mr. Daniel Hinz of Humboldt, SK, occurred at St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt, on Friday, November 1, 2013. He was 88 years of age. Daniel was born to Joseph and Rose (nee Pape) Hinz on December 20, 1924; one of six children. He grew up near Muenster and went to school at St. Francis. Daniel farmed most of his life. On June 20, 1950, he married Marcella Kraeleman. They settled on a farm near Muenster. Together they raised 11 children. Dad worked off the farm as a cement layer/construction worker, and also at Schulte's in Englefeld. Dad was also on many boards, being Road Allowance, and secretary of the Wheat Pool board. He also loved his sports, participating in many a curling game and working at the hockey games. He was a goal judge for the Muenster Flyers hockey team and then later for the Humboldt Broncos. Later he moved to the penalty box for the Broncos where he stayed for 15 years. His nickname there was Woody, because his laugh was so loud and like the cartoon character! Everyone knew where he was when he was laughing! Saturday night was hockey night in the Hinz home. With Dad and all the boys in the house it was a sure thing that the TV would be tuned to one hockey game or another. Sunday's were designated as a day for family where we would play sports on the farm, or take a drive to Humboldt where we always ended up at Hannigan's getting an ice cream cone, one of Dad's favorite foods. His kids remember that if they asked him if they could go somewhere on a Sunday and his answer was "I don't know" they usually ended up going! Dad was a tough man; he always made sure his kids did their chores. The kids knew if they didn't get them done before he got home from work they would definitely be in trouble! But Dad's heart softened when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came around. You could always find him on the farm doing something with them. Dad and Mom moved to Humboldt in 1988, where they stayed to the present. When they moved he took up gardening and he had the best pumpkin patch every year. Dad's favorite pastimes were playing Kaiser or crib and tile rummy with friends and family. He would always get mad when someone would play the wrong card so you didn't want to be that person! Dad always made sure if they needed to be somewhere that they would all be ready long before they needed to leave. He was a big believer in being ready to go early so no one needs to wait for you. He was always early for everything! He also had a way of remembering people. If you asked him who someone was his answer was always, "well, that's what's his name who lives you know where". Daniel is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marcella; their seven children, 24 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren: Larry (Jeanette) Hinz and their family, Jeff (Cindy) Hinz - Kailey, James, and Justin; Craig (Joelle) Hinz - Ashton and Alyssa; Rina (Robert) Sibbeston - MacKenna; and Tim (Gayle) Hinz; Warren (Joanne) Hinz and their family, Christopher Hinz, and Daniel (Nancy) Hinz - Kelsey and Ryder; Rodney (Delphine) Hinz and their family, LaDawn (Blaine) Tokarchik - Tyson, Michelle, Carmen and Owen; Curtis Hinz, Trevor Hinz, Nicole (Jared) Stockbrugger - Zackary, Zoey and Mason, and Melissa Hinz; daughter-in-law, Darlene and family, Brody Hinz and Kendall Hinz; Arlene (Doug) Schmidt and their family, Myra Schmidt, Mark (Connie) Schmidt - Joshua, Justin, Jeremy and Emily, Stephanie Schmidt, and Steven (Kirsten) Schmidt; Wanda (Bill) Ross and their family, Adam Ross (April Stroh), Sherri Ross, and Megan Ross; Melinda (Maurice) Porion and her son Andrew Hinz; Jackie (Keith) Klitch and their family, Ryan (Kira) Klitch, Tiffany Klitch - Tyra, and Samantha Klitch; his sister, Dorothy (John) Zimmer; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Hinz and Maryann Prokosch.
