The passing of Bernard Thoms of Humboldt, SK, occurred at Humboldt District Hospital on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, at the age of 66 years. Bernard was born in Humboldt on November 12, 1948 to Michael and Ann (nee Popowich) Thoms and attended Carmel School. He helped on the farm after his schooling was complete and continued to farm right up to the present.Ìý Bernard drove school bus for close to 40 years as well as anhydrous truck for Humboldt Flour Mills and Horizon Fertilizers and also gravel truck for Brockman Enterprises. He enjoyed going hunting and fishing and also spent numerous hours with his friends from coffee row. In his younger years, he played ball with the Carmel Corvettes as the back catcher and later on as the umpire. Some of his friends got together and formed a band called The Continentals for which he played the drums. Bernard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Linda (nee Saretsky) Thoms; his son Craig (Janelle) Thoms and their children, Rayelle and Dakota; his daughter Tracy Thoms; his mother Ann (nee Popowich) Thoms; his brothers: Lorne (Veronica) Thoms, Ron (Julia) Thoms, Mel (Connie) Thoms; his sister Maryanne (James) Poth; in-laws: Ron (Karen) Saretsky, Larry (Therese) Saretsky, Norbert Saretsky; and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.Ìý He was predeceased by his father Michael Thoms and parents-in-law Nick and Agnes Saretsky. A Prayer Service for Bernard was held at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, on Friday, December 19, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. presided by Walter Sarauer and organist was Dolores Hinz. Scripture readers were Leanne Hunter and Stephanie Thoms. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, on Saturday, December 20, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. celebrated by Fr. Paul Paproski, OSB. Others taking part were: Cory Thoms, crossbearer; Leanne Hunter and Stephanie Thoms, scripture readers and intentions; Byron Poth and Rebecca Spinks, giftbearers; and Amanda and Jeff Pheil, memorial table attendants. Honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Bernard’s life especially his friends from coffee row. Active pallbearers were Richard Saretsky, Jared Poth, Merlin Thoms, Nolan Poth, Brent Thoms and Rocky Saretsky. Interment followed at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Cemetery, Humboldt. Memorial donations may be directed to either the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
