MERKOSKY: Bernard

The peaceful death of Mr. Bernard Merkosky, 76 years of St. Mary's Villa, Humboldt, occurred on Wednesday, November 6, 2013. Bernard, the fourth youngest of 11 children, was born on July 10, 1937 in Humboldt to Charles and Helen (nee Gurski) Merkosky. He lived and grew up on the farm 3 miles west of the Burr district. He attended Mile End Country School, where in the spring and fall when the horses were being used for farm work he had to walk nearly three miles to school. He enjoyed playing hockey and ball with the Burr Tigers. He had a great sense of humor and loved to joke with his family and friends. Bernard attended St. Scholastica Church, where he was both baptized and confirmed. He worked at many different jobs over the years, including farming, carpentry work, cooking at a private nursing home in Saskatoon and working as a caretaker at Dundurn. When his health began to fail, Bernard moved to Wolverine Heights in Muenster, then to Evergreen Country Home in LeRoy, St. Michael's Haven in Cudworth and then finally St. Mary's Villa in Humboldt where he resided until the present. Bernard's faith was important to him and he attended mass daily while living at the Villa. Bernard will be missed by his brother, Ed (Rose) Merkosky; five sisters: Clara Saretsky, Helen Dobni, Chris Dust, Marie (Benno) Korte and Doreen Satnikow; sisters-in-law: Evelyn Merkosky and Johanna Merkosky; and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Helen Merkosky; brothers, Leo Merkosky and Albert Merkosky; sisters, Bertha Muench and Frances Merkosky; sister-in-law Lorraine Merkosky; brothers-in-law: Alfred Saretsky, Arnold Dust, Hugo Muench, Chester Dobni, and Jim Satnikow; niece, Laurie Dust and nephews, Barry Dobni, Brian Saretsky and Ryan Merkosky. The Funeral Mass for Bernard was held on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, Humboldt, celebrated by Fr. Ephraim Mensah. Interment followed in the St. Scholastica Roman Catholic Cemetery. Memorial Donations in Bernard's memory may be made to the St. Scholastica Renovation Fund or St. Augustine Parish Centre. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Malinoski & Danyluik Funeral Home, Humboldt.
