ZILKOWSKY: Bergetta Monica
November 17, 1925 - February 13, 2014
The death of Mrs. Bergetta (nee German) Zilkowsky of Watson, SK (and formerly of Humboldt, SK) occurred at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge, Watson, on Thursday, February 13, 2014. She was 88 years of age. Bergetta, the youngest of nine children, was born to Albinus and Elizabeth (nee Zerff) German on November 17, 1925 in the Carmel District. She attended Valley View School until Grade 8. On October 30, 1945, she married Michael Zilkowsky at Immaculate Conception Church in the Carmel District. Through the years she worked at various jobs while raising their family. In 1968, she and Mike became owner/operators of the Royalite Bulk Station (later PetroCanada) in Humboldt where she worked in the office and warehouse. After "retiring" from the business, she worked part-time at the Elizabethan convent as a cook. Bergetta was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking; and everyone enjoyed the benefits of her skills in the kitchen. She could also sew--everything from children's clothing, to drapery, to crafts and costumes, some of which were creative home-made designs. She always had a large vegetable garden and made plenty of preserves for the winters. Bergetta was a member of the CWL for over 60 years. She participated in the planning and execution of many bazaars, rummage sales and other activities in support of the church. Bergetta and Mike were avid square dancers and members of The Humboldt Twirlers for many years. When she lived at Caleb Village (2011) and more recently at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge (2013), she was the first to get up and dance when there was musical entertainment. Special thanks to the staff at Quill Plains Centennial Lodge in Watson, for their compassionate care while Bergetta was a resident there. Bergetta is survived by five children, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren: MELVIN (Philomena) Zilkowsky of East Lawrencetown, NS and family, Arthur (June) Zilkowsky, Melvin Zilkowsky and daughter Alannah, Allan (Tania) Zilkowsky and children Morgan and Michael; MERVIN Zilkowsky of Edmonton, AB, and family, Chris Zilkowsky and children Kyler, Cassandra, Kala, and Kristle, Colin (Melissa) Zilkowsky and son Cameron, and Leslie Zilkowsky; KATHY (Gilbert) Tremblay of Humboldt and family, Gregg Tremblay and his son Brendan, Alynn (Brett) Tremblay-Meberg and daughter Kaleigh; NOREEN (Clayton) Freistadt of Saskatoon and family, Bob (Shaena) Freistadt and daughter Danica, and Kevin Freistadt; and MICHAEL Zilkowsky of Saskatoon; one sister Veranie Zilkowsky; and in-laws: Cecile Barnes, Frances Northcott, and Arthur Zilkowsky.
