GRUNSKY, Arlene Marie (nee Schiltz)

Arlene was born on January 19, 1934 in Humboldt, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm near Annaheim, Saskatchewan, with her parents, Cornelius and Mary Schiltz and four sisters.

Growing up in a family of girls meant there were always outside chores to be done, which Arlene much preferred. She would rather clean the barn instead of doing housework or cooking.

Arlene and her sisters attended Schuler School where they made up half of the softball team. Arlene was the star pitcher and the whole family spent many hours attending ball tournaments where they were usually very successful.

Once Arlene graduated from high school she moved to Humboldt to work at the bank. Along with her sisters, cousin, Joyce and friend, Olga, her evenings and weekends were spent attending all of the areas many dances.

After she married she moved to Alberta where she spent the rest of her life. Her interests turned first to curling and then to bowling, both of which she excelled at.

Arlene worked for many years, mainly as a bookkeeper, to provide for her children. Once her family was grown she continued to work and developed a love of travelling and visited many countries over the years.

After Arlene retired she indulged in her lifelong love of books and spent countless hours reading. She also enjoyed doing crossword and word search puzzles and going for her daily walk.

After a short battle with lung cancer, Arlene passed away on November 16, 2012 in Edmonton, Alberta.

She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Gwen (as a child) and Gladys Drader; and youngest son, Rodney Grunsky.

Left to remember her with loving thoughts are her daughter, Sherry (Stan) Vickers; son, Robin Grunsky; grandchildren, Micheal Vickers, Yvonne (Cameron) Badger, & David Vickers; great-grandchildren, Alyssa & Kyle Badger; sisters, Lorraine Gessner & Louise (Lee) Hartl along with other family members and friends.

Cremation has taken place and as per her request, her ashes will be laid to rest with her parents, in Annaheim, in the spring.

A very special thank you goes to the wonderful staff on Unit 7 West at the Misericordia Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion during this difficult time.
