It is with much sadness that the family of Alan Donald Voellmecke of Muenster announces his death at Humboldt District Hospital on Sunday, September 19, 2010. He was 74 years of age. Alan was born on November 22, 1935, to Albert and Martha (nee Stuntebeck) Voellmecke in Humboldt. He was raised on the Voellmecke family farm eight miles northeast of Muenster, and attended Arras Rural School, where he was taught by his mother, and St. Peter's College. Following his education, Alan farmed with his father and, eventually, took over the farm. Alan was the fourth generation in the Voellmecke family to operate the farm. Another point of pride and interest is the fact that the homestead farmhouse which has been "home" to Alan his entire life marked 100 years of age in 2008. On October 6, 1956, he married Deldene Schemenauer in St. James R.C. Church. Their marriage was blessed with three children, two sons and a daughter. Together, Alan and Deldene operated the grain farm and were registered seed growers for over 30 years. In 1994, due to Alan's health challenges, he was forced to give up his beloved occupation for which he always had a passion for. In his younger years, Alan loved curling and coaching hockey. Once he could no longer participate he enjoyed those sports as a spectator. An avid outdoorsman, he also enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, and feeding the deer and birds in his yard. In more recent years, Alan's favourite pastimes included woodworking, refinishing furniture, and going to garage sales and flea markets with Deldene. His family meant the world to him. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, each of whom had a special place in his heart, and the addition of a great-granddaughter really gave him a great reason to smile. Alan will be lovingly remembered by his wife of almost 54 years, Deldene (nee Schemenauer) Voellmecke of Muenster; three children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild: Richard (Karen) Voellmecke of Prince Albert and family, Lesley Voellmecke (Mathieu Rioux) of Ottawa, ON, Amanda (Jason) Thiemann and daughter Ava of St. Gregor, Melissa Walliser of Saskatoon, and Katie Walliser of Prince Albert; Dawn (Aaron) Price and family, Joshua, Maria and Eli Price, all of Kamloops, BC, and Dave (Collette) Voellmecke and daughter Megan of Lloydminster; brother-in-law, Don (Audrey) Schemenauer of Humboldt; one niece and three nephews: Scott, Daryl, Russel, Gail and families. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Martha (nee Stuntebeck) Voellmecke; and by his parents-in-law, Walter and Hilda Schemenauer. The Prayer Service for Alan was held at St. Peter's R.C. Cathedral, Muenster, on Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 pm., led by Garry Loehr. Music ministry was provided by organist Christy Waldner and soloist Josh Price. Scripture readers were Amanda Thiemann and Karen Voellmecke. The Funeral Mass was offered at St. Peter's R.C. Cathedral on Friday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Daniel Muyres, OSB. Others taking part were: Eli Price, cross bearer; Lesley Voellmecke and Maria Price, scripture readers; Megan and Collette Voellmecke, intentions; and Jason, Amanda and Ava Thiemann, gift bearers. Interment followed at St. Peter's R.C. Cemetery, Muenster. Memorial donations may be directed to either the St. Peter's Cathedral Restoration Fund or the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Schuler-Lefebvre Funeral Chapel, Humboldt, SK.
