Nosferatu arrives at the Dekker Centre on its 100th anniversary

What is there to do for Halloween? The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra will bring the classic horror movie Nosferatu just in time for Halloween.

NORTH BATTLEFORD — Brian Unverricht, a retired high-school music teacher, has been with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra for over 40 years, and loves Halloween.

Oct. 20, he and the SSO are playing the soundtrack to a screening of Nosferatu at the Dekker Centre as a part of a four-part tour to Lloydminster, North Battleford, Saskatoon and Melfort.

Nosferatu is a 1922 German horror film based on Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. The film uses adaptations of Johannes Braum’s classical music, which Unverricht says fits the movie’s atmosphere well. Peter Kay also wrote pieces for the film. 

“Some of the music is quite challenging. It’s kinda scratchy, but it’s done on purpose. It’s really beautiful music, but pretty demanding on the players.

“Some come for the movie, but some come just for the concert. When the SSO did these shows before, there were some people who would sit in the very front row of every show, and I think they watch the musicians as much as the movie.”

Before the film, the SSO will be playing a Felix the Cat short Pedigreedy from 1927. Tickets can be purchased at the : dekkercentre.com.
