MAYFAIR — Many of you taking bets on if the snow will stay. Within a few miles, there are varying amounts. It is getting fairly late in October so no surprise if winter has decided to settle in the next five months or so. Bone-chilling winds are always unpleasant
Volleyball is coming to the end of the season shortly. The junior boys at Maymont Central School pulled off a victory in the tournament the school hosted last Monday. The school was bustling with the four teams that entered bringing in many spectators to cheer the boys on. Thanks to their coach Ryan Nickell (teacher) who also coaches other school sports.
An oversight on my part in the report I submitted to last week’s paper on the spectacular haunted house near Meeting Lake. Linda Price’s three granddaughters helped out extensively with setting up the props, volunteering to work during the viewings and taking down displays Oct. 15. Most of all, think of all the fun they had. A job well done girls — Jordan Price; Rylee Price and Abby Swistun. Some of the funds from the gate volunteer donations are going to Spiritwood Travel Club, not Spiritwood’s High School Travel Club.
4-H clubs are starting up again this fall. One can always Google a town to check on what projects are available. This is not only for farm children and it is an educational program under the instruction of many dedicated leaders.
There is a fall supper at Medstead Hall Nov. 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults; 12 years and under $10 and preschoolers free. This is a fundraiser for curling rink repairs.
A craft fair and market will be held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Medstead School. One can also register children for a skating club during the craft fair. Call 306-342-4988 for more information. On the same day, Hafford and District Recreation Board’s Craft Fair/Winter Market is at the Communiplex from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Table rental is $30. For more information contact [email protected].
A heck of a show was put on by Shantaia from Nashville, Tenn. and her first cousin Brody Siebert at Coors Event Centre in Saskatoon last Wednesday evening. They sang their hearts out to many fans, including locals from the Spiritwood and Leoville area. Did I attend? Of course, I did with a friend and the only problem was limited seating. Shantaia was fortunate to use Brody’s four-member band who are talented musicians. She sang some of her originals along with other country songs. Brody’s performances were mostly rock ‘n roll. The Poulin and Siebert families were excitedly welcoming many people in attendance. Grandmother Bernice Tiringer from Spiritwood is extremely proud of these two artists.
The Goldenaires Club in Hafford has a busy schedule not just for seniors but open to anyone. There is bingo every Tuesday at 7 p.m. with card prices of $10, $12 and $14. The jackpot is $500 in 53 numbers. Kaiser with a fee of $5 is hosted Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Both activities are at the seniors’ centre. Monday is floor curling at 1 p.m. starting Nov. 20 at the Communiplex. Brighten up those dreary “blah” dull cold days by joining in the fun.
Congregations of two local viable churches pass on a big thank you for the money raised at a concert featuring Doug Sylvester and Jeff Arndt at Mayfair Hall two weeks ago.
A bull riding event was hosted Oct. 7 by Spiritwood Area Recreation Culture and Sport. This was held indoors at their Rec Centre. Ed Sazsz, the lead committee organizer, works extensively throughout the year to lay the groundwork for this Silver Bull Riding Competition. The winning bull rider was Cody Koverchuk from Meadow Lake area. He edged out others from as far away as Australia, Montana and various places in western Canada. Cody’s final ride earned an impressive 87 score. The evening ended with 400 people at the cabaret with music by Saskatchewan country artist Lisa Moen.
