Mayfair and District News: Rabbit Lake hosts Christmas supper Dec. 1

Festival of Treats in Spiritwood Dec. 9.

MAYFAIR — We are finally receiving a bit more snow. Will it stay? The last week of November is underway and then we’re already into the final calendar month for 2023. Time sure doesn’t stand still no matter what age we are.

December promises to be a busy month and for the folks who like to be out and about as many events are taking place. Sandwith turkey bingo and potluck with a silent auction to follow is on Dec. 8 starting at 5:30 p.m. This hamlet is 14 kilometres from Glenbush and not too far southwest of Rabbit Lake.

Mark your calendar for a Christmas Rabbit Lake supper Friday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at their community hall. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for ages 12 and preschoolers Free. This supper is sponsored by the community hall. Then after supper, the Senior Sunrise Circle is hosting a ham/ turkey bingo at 7 p.m. Sounds like a great evening out for surrounding areas to partake in at Rabbit Lake and Sandwith one week apart.

Farther down the highway on Saturday, Dec. 9 Spiritwood’s action is the Festival of Treats, which is a dessert auction. Cocktails are at 5 p.m., supper at 6 p.m. and a magician and DJ to follow. One can obtain tickets at Spiritwood’s confectionery or to reserve a table please call Shirley at 306-883-7047. Tickets are $60 each. One does not have to always drive to larger centres to find social events for an evening out.

A fair-sized crowd was drawn to Mayfair’s Hall Nov. 26 for the Christmas Craft Sale. Many door prizes were on offer but best of all, Santa arrived at 2 p.m. which put a smile on everyone’s face. After all who doesn’t like this jolly, bubbly fellow? The hall was beautifully decorated with mostly homemade classy decorations for the festive season. A big thank you to all volunteers who make this special day a memorable one in our small hamlet.

Condolences to the Arstall family on the passing of Arthur (Art) who was born in Rabbit Lake in 1931. The family farmed east of Mayfair and their children attended Mayfair School. They then moved to an acreage near Spiritwood and later to Shellbrook. He is survived by his wife Irene, four children and families.

Almost a centenarian, Ann Paradis of Battlefords District Care Centre passed away last week. She also has a connection to Mayfair. She spent her childhood years on her parents’, (last name Sapchuk) farm east of Mayfair. She is survived by two daughters and their families from Saskatchewan, Alberta and Arizona. Deepest sympathies extended to everyone.

Meeting Lake Regional Park slogan on clothing designed by cabin owner Jason Fandrich is becoming a popular gift item for Christmas. Check the website for more information but the deadline for Christmas orders is Dec. 8.

Speers United Church hosts an advent service this Sunday, Dec. 3. It starts at 8:45 a.m. with special music provided by The Joyful Melody Trio. Sunday, Dec. 10 a White Gift theme service is scheduled for 4 p.m. (please note the time change) followed by a potluck supper and a program. The gifts are to be donated to Battlefords Interval House.
