MAYFAIR — We are now experiencing the deep freeze of winter. Already the local buses haven’t run for two days but the school is open. Parents of students who will not be in school are to report that information to ensure the children are accounted for and are safe.
I wonder how those electric cars are running in -40 C temperatures? A Kelowna man who owns an electric vehicle visiting in Saskatoon was en route home in this bone-chilling weather. He had to charge and claims it takes twice as long to do this. Waiting in the vehicle requires the engine running as the heater is going full blast to keep the driver warm. This small EV requires charging every 280 kilometres in extreme cold temperatures. The owner of this car said the trip is taking three times longer. Words of wisdom for Canadians who wish to own one of these vehicles. They have “deep pockets” and don’t keep a schedule.
Rabbit Lake Rink has started with their fun night every other Tuesday. Dates are Jan. 23, Feb. 6 and 20 and March 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. Participants can skate, play a game of bunnock and purchase burgers and fries at the concession. Skating fees are $50 for students; $100 family or $5 per skate. Fees are to be paid by Jan. 23. Many seniors like to come to have supper and socialize. Thursday, Jan. 25 is Robbie Burns Day and you don’t have to be Scottish to celebrate. Ruddell is having a “Robbie Burns” potluck at 6:15 p.m., encouraging participants to prepare a Scottish dish and share. Of course, one can bring whatever edible item they want. There will be a draw for luggage donated by SaskTel. Please remember to wear plaid. Come join the fun on a winter evening.

Quenton Lehmann of Victoria, B.C. has achieved much success in the sport of curling. He came from a family of 13 children (parents Gus and Edna are both deceased) with a couple of siblings who still live locally. Quenton and his team will represent their zone at the Pacific Coast Master Curling Association provincial playdowns in Vernon, B.C. at the end of March. They will also represent British Columbia at the Canadian 55 plus Senior Games in August which will take place in Quebec City.
Most travellers to the United States know liquor and smokes are relatively cheap compared to our goods in Canada. A chain grocery store called Albertsons in Yuma, Ariz., advertised an 18-pack of Coors Light beer or Budweiser for $11.97. Ridiculously too cheap. No wonder so many older retired people with nothing to do frequently have happy hour in the afternoon and then go to bed by 7:30 p.m. That’s not the life for me because I’m usually too busy volunteering my time at a disabled veterans’ centre or music jams in many other RV parks. As the saying goes “different strokes for different folks.”
