BATTLEFORD - A man facing charges in the death of Jeremy Ernest two years ago was sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter Monday.
Trevor Alexander, 32, of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation, appeared in shackles in an orange sweatshirt at the Court of King's Bench in Battleford Sept. 9.
A publication ban is in effect on the details of the case until all the accused have gone through the court process.
Justice Krista Zerr sentenced Alexander to 10 years in custody less credit for time served for the manslaughter charge. Minus time served, he has just under nine years left to serve.
For a separate charge of aggravated assault, Alexander received three years in custody, to be served concurrently.
He must also submit a DNA sample and was ordered to a lifetime firearms prohibition.
Meadow Lake RCMP previously reported that Ernest, 36, died on Waterhen Lake First Nation on Nov. 12, 2022. Police and paramedics had been called to a home at about 4:30 a.m. and found Ernest injured. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
