BORDEN — The Borden and District Lions Club held a successful outdoor flea market Saturday, May 25, with more than 40 vendors having their wares for sale on four blocks in Borden.
The Lions Club sold 50/50 tickets and the winner of $222 was Rhonda Siery of Borden. Closest guess to the more than 1,800 jelly beans in a jar was Florence Neufeld. Guessing the number of candies in a jar for the 12 and under set was Blaire Dolsen. For the teens, the winner was Myla Johnston. Guessing the number of macaroni and brown rice in a small jar was won by Bernice Kramchynsky. All are from the Borden area. Each winner received a cooler or bag full of donated items plus the jar of candies or jelly beans.
At the Anglican Church table, a donated antique pottery mixing bowl was raffled off and this was won by Ken and Tam Youngson.
The Borden Museum was also open for the afternoon. They will officially open June 1 at 2 p.m. serving ice cream sundaes in the schoolhouse for all who are in attendance.
The museum received a grant to hire a summer student. Filling the position is Kaidyn Turgeon, from Langham. She will be opening the museum Saturdays and Sundays in June from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In July and August, the museum will be open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 5 p.m. There is no charge but any donations are always welcome.
Winning the 50/50 at the Borden Farmers Market May 24 was Lucy Isaac of Langham. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday in the Seniors’ Room in the Borden Community Centre. If you like hot dogs and pie, it is a great place to eat your noon meal.
Diefenbaker Daze is June 1 and 2 with a slopitch tournament both days, parade Saturday at 11 a.m., museum opening at 2 p.m., steak supper for $25 at the grounds Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and a cabaret in the evening. There will be a kids’ zone and concession booth both days and on Sunday there is a pancake breakfast at the grounds from 8 to 11 a.m. and an ecumenical joint church service outdoors at the Borden Care Home at 10:30 a.m. with Celtic Country providing the music. All other activities are at the sports grounds until the ball finals.
Condolences are extended to the families and friends of Hylke van der Wahl of Radisson who passed away May 10 at the age of 86 and to family at Borden of Roy Nykiforuk, who passed away May 15 at the age of 97. Roy was originally from Borden then lived in Saskatoon for many years and had recently moved into the Borden Care Home. His service was held May 21 in Saskatoon. Condolences also to the family of Brad Funk of Cee Pee who passed away May 23. A celebration of his life will be held in the Borden Community Centre May 30 at 11 a.m.
