Yorkton Terriers pick up first win of season

The Terriers begin this week in Warman to take part in the SJHL Showcase, facing La Ronge Monday. The first period was a scoreless affair. In the second Paul Savage would give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

The Terriers begin this week in Warman to take part in the SJHL Showcase, facing La Ronge Monday.

The first period was a scoreless affair.

In the second Paul Savage would give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.

Derek Frater tied the score with a goal 5:22 into the third, but Brandon Sookro would re-establish a Yorkton lead with his sixth goal of the young season at 6:50, with Reid Anderson adding an insurance marker into an empty net.

Matt Kustra was in the Terrier net for the single goal, facing 16-shots in 30:11 minutes of play. Cameron Pateman faced 21-shots.

Kris Joyce took the loss for La Ronge facing 36-shots.

The Terriers were scheduled to face Melville Tuesday in Warman, but results were not available at press time.

With their first win of the season the Terriers have a record of 1-6 and two points, lifting themselves out of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League Viterra Division basement, where Melville now resides being winless so far this season.

Weyburn and Estevan sit tied atop the Viterra, both with 11-points.

Home ice loss

Friday evening the Terriers hosted Notre Dame with the hosts having a spirited first period outshooting the Hounds 12-5 and getting the period’s only marker a powerplay effort by Paul Savage.

Tyler Podgorenko tied the score 1-1 with a Hound powerplay goal at 5:08 of the second.

Chance Longjohn gave Notre Dame the lead at 6:47, with Ian Williams making it 3-1 with another man advantage marker at 8:24.

Jordan Evans drew the Terriers within one with a Yorkton powerplay goal at 12:06 of the second.

But Williams was back for his second of the night 3:28 into the third, with Gavin Apperson making it 5-2 at 7:28.

Brandon Sookro would draw the Terriers a bit closer with a goal at 8:11 of the third, before Rhett Kingston finished the scoring at 14:22 for the Hounds to make it a 6-3 Notre Dame victory.

Riley Welyk was in net for the Hounds facing 32-shots in the win.

Matt Kustra started the game in net for Yorkton allowing five goals on 25-shots before being lifted for Cameron Pateman who allowed one-goal on four shots.

Up next

The Terriers will host Melville Friday at the Farrell Agencies Arena, with Yorkton back in the Millionaires barn Saturday.
