The Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers of the SSMHL were stopped dead in their tracks this past weekend in Swift Current as the second place Â鶹ÊÓƵwest Terminal Broncos upended the first place Terriers in back-to-back games, taking the first 7-6 before lambasting the proud peewees 5-1.
The two losses drop the Sherring Gold Terrier record to 15-3-0, however they continue to lead the six team SSMHL Peewee Division with 30 points, two ahead of second place Swift Current (12-0-4).
The Weybun Youngfellow Wings are in third place with an 11-6-2 record and 24 points, 11 ahead of fourth place Moose Jaw (5-9-3).
The Estevan Westmoreland Bruins sit in fifth place with a 5-12-2 record and 12 points while Melville rounds out the six team flight with a 0-18-1 record and one point.
Saturday
The host Broncos opened up a four goal lead in the first period, shocking the high flying Sherring Gold Terriers thanks to goals by Hayden Wilm, Rhett Evjen, Levi Lamotte and Hendrik de Klerk.
However Jackon Berezowski managed to get the Terriers on the board late in the period with his first of the game to make it a 4-1 game after 20 minutes.
A Swift Current power play goal by de Klerk restored the four goal Bronco lead midway through the second period but a pair of Yorkton goals, one each by Ryder Korczak and Josh Herman, made it 5-3 before Swift Current’s Reed Jacobson made it 6-3 late in the frame.
The third period saw Spencer Welke replaced between the Terrier pipes in favour of Kael DePape, however the move didn’t initially prove to be a good one as Jacobson scored his second of the game just seven seconds into the frame to make it 7-3 Broncos.
Berezowski’s second of the game with 14:05 left I the period made it 7-4 before he once again put the puck past Swift Current goalie Jacob Herman with just under five minutes in the game to complete the hattrick and make it a two goal game.
Less than a minute later Yorkton’s Tony Roebuck cut the Swift Current lead to just one, however that was as close as the Terriers would get as their comeback bid fell short in a 7-6 defeat.
Sunday
Sunday’s game didn’t prove to be better for the Sherring Gold Terriers as the Broncos scored one in the first, two in the second and two in the third before Josh Herman finally broke the Chase Coward shutout bid with 8:56 left in the third period as the Sherring Gold Terriers suffered their second straight defeat and third loss of the season, 5-1 to Swift Current.
The next action for the Yorkton Sherring Gold Terriers is tonight (Wednesday) when they welcome the Weyburn Youngfellow Wings to the Kinsmen Arena for Game One of their two game third round total goals provincial series.
