Whether it’s first hand or by association, cancer is something that has affected nearly everyone, with friends, family, coworkers and neighbours being stricken by some variety of the horrible disease.
It’s no different for the Yorkton RawTec Maulers as Terri Shea – a RawTec Mauler parent and billet mom – has been battling the disease for the last little while.
However Shea has not had to battle it alone, as the entire Yorkton RawTec Mauler hockey team has been on her side every day, helping her defeat the disease.
More recently the Maulers have reached out to the community of Yorkton to help support not only Shea, but anyone fighting cancer by promoting their upcoming ‘Paint the Rink Pink’ event on October 24. “One of the things that we try to promote with our guys is that they have to try and get involved with the community efforts and cancer is something that has affected every family,” said RawTec Mauler General Manager Garth Simms. “It’s especially relevant to our Mauler family because one of our parents and billet mothers, Terri Shea, is fighting it right now.
“The guys chose to do this to show support for her and to call on the community to get behind them and support the cause. That’s what the weekend is all about when we play the Saskatoon Contacts on the 24th, to help not only Terri, but anyone fighting cancer.”
Simms said that the game will be free for anyone to attend provided they wear pink, and that in addition to a silver collection at the gate there will also be a silent auction on the one-of-a-kind pink Mauler jerseys, as well as over 50 raffle prizes.
Some of the prizes that will be raffled off will be an Edmonton Oilers jersey signed by former Mauler and current Oilers prospect Ethan Bear, a New Jersey Devils jersey signed by Damon Severson, autographed Calgary Hitmen and Calgary Stampeder jerseys as well as many other big prizes.
Game time for the Paint the Rink Pink game will be 8:00p.m. on Saturday, October 24, with the game on the 25th starting at 2:00pm.]
