With the Terriers, Harvest done a long, long time ago, and most of the minor hockey teams done, that leaves a whole lot of time on the schedule for other things.
The insane lineups at Wendy's on Sunday afternoon were good proof that there's other things going on.
But a couple things over the weekend, including a bunch of little kids' hockey games, took place that don't usually come around.
Starting out on Friday with the Zumbathon Fundraiser for Celiac Research hosted/sponsored by the Yorkton Regional High School SRC.
A friend at the YRHS gave me a different headline to use for this but it wasn't quite suitable for print so I had to go with this one!
Forever FIT provided the instructors. Lots of local businesses donated door prizes and silent auction items, says Roby Sharpe, student services co-ordinator at the Regional High School.
Not everyone knows what this Zumba thing is yet but the music is good and there were a lot of people there on Friday, including local businesses that bought tables at the event in support of Celiac Research. Sharpe said that he suspects it raised over $2000, allthough it hasn't actually been counted yet.
Zumba dance is latin-inspired body movements that has picked up locally. The YRHS proved that on Friday too.
Sharpe said it was so good, it's going to be annual.
The idea came from a YRHS student currently with Celiac disease, Karleigh Gelowitz, says Sharpe.
Celiac disease is a medical condition in which the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged by a substance called gluten. This results in the body having a reduced ability to absorb nutrients.
There isn't a known cure for the disease, but Celiac disease is readily treated by following the gluten free diet. The YRHS and various outlets across the City joined forces in selling tickets and a good sized crowd came out on Friday.
From there it was onto girls' volleyball, local hockey tournament games and a figure skating carnival which included a pair of former Olympians from Vancouver 2010, Anabelle Langlois and fiancee Cody Hay.
By the end of the day on Sunday, everyone was getting ready to head home, with the exception of the staff of Yorkton's Wendy's.
If you decided around 4:30 p.m., that something off of the Wendy's menu was what you wanted it was going to take a good half hour to get it.
Lineups were long.
Most of them were the volleyball players from the 18 and Under tournament hosted by the McSweeney's Selects, who didn't actually play in the games. Teams from Saskatchewan and Manitoba played.
Langlois and Hay were asked to be a part of Skate Yorkton's year end carnival, flew into Regina the morning before the carnival (Saturday) and spent most of the day at the Farrell Agencies Arena getting ready.
"She contacted Anabelle," says Hay, referring to Susan Nagy, head coach of the Yorkton club, talked to Anabelle to set it up.
The two were in Yorkton for just under two days. Put on a good show, then packed up and left.
Part of their schedule now that they are both done with competitive skating (as of the Vancouver Winter Games), sees them travel all over, including in the USA, promoting skating.
"It's neat to see it all," insists Cody Hay just after he and Langois completed their first of two routines at the Farrell Agencies Arena; speaking of the Gallagher Centre, the worst news I got all weekend was the ice in the curling club was coming out within 24 hours day.
"Everything here's been awesome," observed Hay.
Darrell Sobkow's Novice hockey team picked up a 'B' side championship in Major Hockey League action recently. Whoever is putting the championship banners together for the Yorkton Minor Hockey Association teams that are winning (both provincials and league) is going to have their work cut out for them.
The count as of Sunday evening was around 6. The Mark's Work Wearhouse Yorkton Terriers reportedly have a biggy coming up this week.
