MONTREAL — A Quebec man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman was stabbed at a shopping centre Wednesday east of Montreal.

Marc-André Houle, 43, appeared briefly by videoconference today at the courthouse in St-Hyacinthe, Que.

He is charged in the stabbing death of Manon Savoie, 54, of St-Pie, Que., a nearby town.

Quebec provincial police say the victim and suspect did not know each other.

The suspect had allegedly fled the scene and was arrested nearly 90 kilometres away from the Galeries St-Hyacinthe shopping centre, located about 60 kilometres east of Montreal.

Houle has also been charged with attempted murder of another woman in connection with the same incident, and he also faces charges of assault with a weapon, car theft and fleeing police. The case returns to court on Sept. 3.
