The 2023 SBRA barrel racing finals wrapped up successfully this week

On Aug. 17, the Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association wrapped up finals at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds

MOOSEJAWTODAY.COM — The 2023 Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association (SBRA) finals have just wrapped up at the Moose Jaw Exhibition Grounds, and event organizers said the show was a success.

Loralei Stokke, the District 9 director for the SBRA finals, said that Moose Jaw has been a great host. “The guys here at the exhibition grounds were amazing to deal with, they’re always friendly, and the grounds were great. It’s just a really good atmosphere.”

“Everyone is super happy with Moose Jaw,” added Nicole Hicks, vice president of the SBRA. “The hospitality at the Exhibition Grounds is unbelievable; it’s top-notch for sure.”

The barrel racing event started on Monday, Aug. 14 with peewees and youths. On Tuesday, Aug. 15 the open and Bonanza categories started, and finals wrapped up on the morning of Thursday, Aug. 17.

Competitors came from all over the province, as well as neighbouring Manitoba and Alberta to showcase their skill and agility.

Open short winners

The winning horse in the 1D open short category belongs to Dana Lovell, riding BHR Light My Fire. Her time was 13.874 seconds.

The 2D open short category winner was Jamie Levesque, riding MS Frosted Beauty. Her time was 14.589 seconds.

The 3D open short category winner was Kalbry Pearson, riding Dash N’ Dimples. Her time was 15.314 seconds.

The 3D youth short category winner was Karis Gerde, riding BQH Two Moon Deck. Her time was 16.499 seconds.

Bonanza category winners

The Bonanza category is a big deal with the Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association (SBRA). Only Saskatchewan-bred stallions are entered, which gives the event a local born-and-raised sense of pride. Pay is based on averages, rather than sudden death as in the open and open youth categories.

The winning horse belongs to Brooklyn Shauf, riding TSJ Frosted Sparkle. Her time on two runs was 28.363 seconds.

The 2D category winner was Michyla Kielo, riding Fuegos Jess Babe. Her time on two runs was 30.466 seconds.

The 3D category winner was Aleaha More, riding Sum R’ First. Her time on two runs was 32.492 seconds.

Next year’s event hasn’t been scheduled yet, but everyone is invited to attend. “If people want to come out and watch we encourage it,” Stokke said. “It’s very family-oriented all the way from peewees to seniors’ barrel racing. It’s a good place to come out and see the horses run, and a lot of the time you can pet a horse or two along the way.”
