Vegas Golden Knights amateur scout Erin Ginnell hoists the Stanley Cup after the team won it in June. Ginnell will be bringing the trophy to Flin Flon as part of the traditional "one day with the Cup", including bringing it to area schools and the Whitney Forum.

FLIN FLON REMINDER — Hockey's greatest prize is on its way to Flin Flon next week.

The Stanley Cup will be brought to Flin Flon Oct. 17, being brought around to local schools and to the Whitney Forum.

Erin Ginnell, an amateur scout with the Vegas Golden Knights, is the reason why the trophy is heading north. Ginnell was part of the Golden Knights' staff when the team won the Cup last June.

Ginnell is part of hockey royalty in Flin Flon, the son of former Bomber and team coach Paddy Ginnell and the father of former Bombers Brad and Riley Ginnell. Raised in Medicine Hat, Alta., Ginnell spent his early years in Flin Flon, where Patty coached the Bombers during Erin's childhood before moving to Victoria, Lethbridge, Swift Current and other locations.

"I think it’s going to be really special to take it home, a place that has shaped me and my hockey background," said Ginnell.

"Such good people there and they deserve to see the Cup and be a part of the celebrations that I’ve been fortunate to have had over the past few months."

During the day, the Cup will be brought to schools in Flin Flon and Creighton throughout the morning, then will be brought to the Whitney Forum for a two-hour viewing from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

It is unknown when the Stanley Cup was last brought to Flin Flon, if it has ever been before. The trophy has been won by Flin Flonners before, most notably by Bobby Clarke, but the customary "day with the Cup" tradition began in 1995, after the heyday of most Flin Flonners in the NHL came to an end. The trophy is usually accompanied by at least one representative from the Hockey Hall of Fame during the days.
