REGINA - It was announced Tuesday that the Honourable Robert Leurer, a Justice of the Court of Appeal for Saskatchewan, has been appointed the new Chief Justice of Saskatchewan.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday. Leurer takes over as Chief Justice from Hon. Robert G. Richards who retired August 31.
“The Honourable Robert Leurer is a highly respected member of Saskatchewan and Canada’s legal community,” said Trudeau in a statement.” As he takes on his new role as Chief Justice of Saskatchewan, I wish him continued success. I know he brings a wealth of experience to the position and will continue to serve the people of Saskatchewan well.”
Prior to his appointment as Chief Justice, Leurer had been serving on the Court of Appeal since 2017. Before that he was a lawyer with MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP, now MLT Aikins, in Regina, focusing on product liability and class actions. He had also clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada. He has been a member of the Saskatchewan bar since 1986.
Leurer obtained his law degree in 1984 from the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated as the Gold Medalist.
