REGINA — The Regina Police Service are advising residents regarding a recent scam that has been reported.
During two separate incidents, elderly victims have received a call from someone posing as their grandchild and the grandchild requested money. The calls involved a “story” that the grandchild has been in an accident and needs money to pay for lawyers, bail or avoid further prosecution. In both cases a person who is claiming to be a “courier” arrived at the victim’s home to pick up cash.
If you receive this type of call, do not send or agree to have someone pick up money. Ask the caller a few personal questions that only your grandchild would know the answer to.
Hang up the phone and call your grandchild or another trusted family member to verify the claims or requests.
Any kind of high pressure tactics usually means it’s a scam.
The Regina Police Service encourages you to talk to your family members and elderly loved ones to help spread the word about grandparent and other emergency scams.
