YORKTON - Dr. Brass School students involved in the Building Active Leaders program were out Friday digging in the dirt and planting flowers at Yorkton City Hall.
Instructor Kristen Nagy said the effort was part of the program’s focus on random acts of kindness in the community, which are designed to make the community better.
The 22 students involved had previously helped plant at the Botanical Gardens at Logan Flats.
Both planting efforts were an opportunity to get out in nature, which Nagy said is important and they can see the benefits of the connection.
“You read about the benefits of being outside, the benefit of being in nature and it’s really cool to see that,” she said.
Nagy noted that on their day at the Botanical Gardens interest was not initially very high, but five minutes into planting the students were involved and focused.
Building Active Leaders is an academy that explores opportunities outside of the school in fitness, health and kindness initiatives. This academy is for students interested in leadership and learning opportunities outside of the classroom, details the school website.
Nagy said it is interesting to see the students discovering new interests through the program.
